Kirkham Speedometer
 
For those with the new style Kirkham gauges, what is the procedure for calibrating the speedometer?

Hi,
Press and hold the little button for 10-12 seconds to put the gauge into calibration mode. Select the "PPM" icon. It will then prompt you to press the button again to start callibration. Then drive precisely 2 miles and press the button again.

Job done...easy.

If you have the built-in fuel level gauge, that can also be set from the same calibration menu. Instead of selecting PPM, select "Fuel Level" (or something similar). You can then select the full and empty ranges. The only problem is that the fuel tank sender unit is apparently an optional extra although it doesn't appear on any of the options lists....yet. :)

I really wish they'd get some documentation on their site for this stuff...

The gauge site only has a couple install guides. I can pretty much figure out how to drill a hole. I also understand the gauges are Tom's project but there's no link to them on the Kirkham site that I saw.

JJ I don't think it matters, the speedo is counting pulses from the sender during that time frame so your telling it "OK, those many pulses was 2 miles" from that it figures out everything else... (Time being a constant for MPH calculation)

Gas gauge is also a variable with different sending units, so it would also require a cal. If your tanks not perfectly square this can be off some as well.

Looking at Paul's post I'm guessing that's what PPM stands for - Pulses per mile. (or miles in this case)

Maybe this is a dumb question..... Does the engine have to be running or the car be in motion for the toggle to work? I tried the toggle with the key in the accessory position and the display did not change. When I took it for the first spin yesterday, the odometer read too many miles and the speedometer did not work at all. Could these be related? I hooked up the red & black wires from the speedomoter harness to the plug that goes into the TKO600 speedometer port.

Except for a few little gremlins like a small oil leak and this speedometer issue, the first drive was superb.

They do have some instructions on this-Joe sent them to me yesterday via- email. Drop him a note. It is really pretty simple.

Have you been driving my Kirkham ? :)
You have exactly the same symptoms as me, including the small oil leak. I haven't calibrated mine either yet as the weather has been crap, but I'm hoping that will sort it out. I can't imagine it will fix the leak though :(

I'm pretty sure it is mine..... It was delivered with file finish in component form in October of 2006 and it took this long to get it going. I would have had it done six or eight months ago, but we had twin girls in August. I think my wife is more happy than I am because I can now start on house projects.

The oil leak is coming from the area around the block plate for the remote cooler, but I'm having trouble finding it. It's puking a couple of tablespoons of oil each time I start it.

Congratulation on the twins, they'll keep you busy. :)
My Kirkham was only delivered in January this year. KMS now produce a billet block adapter for the remote filter and oil cooler, which has a rubber o-ring seal rather than a normal gasket.
My oil leak is really a very slight "weep", but it is coming from somewhere around the back of the block and I suspect it's the rear crank seal. :(
I'll see how it goes.

If the odometer clocked off miles and the speedo read nothing it sounds like a bad speedo to me...

Your hitting the little button under the dash to go into cal mode right?

Interesting find BTW: http://www.speedhut.com/ shows their in Utah... Gauges look familiar.
