Do Not Trust Assume Dowl Pins Will Keep Wingnuts On

I am here to state (from personal experience) this last weekend, a wing nut flew off my Trigo wheel - slipping by the safety dowl pine on the knock off hub. I am Very lucky, and highly advise everyone who this applies to: Drill a hole in the knock offs (if one is not present), attach the safety wire from your knock off spinner to the wheel. There is a reason why this safety pre-caution was implemented back in the day....

Knock ons

wasn't there an issue last week with a Kirkham and a knock on coming adrift?

David Kirkham 07-14-2008 01:51 PM

otomix,

Was the knockoff a billet knock off or was it a forged knock off? We will get to the bottom of this very quickly. Give me a call so we can discuss this and solve it.

Safety wire is used extensively in the aircraft industry and has been for many many years. It's not the strength of the wire that keeps bolts on, but the direction the wire is fed through the holes in the bolt heads, which prevents vibration/shrinkage loosening. Even when temperature affects the pins or bolts, the lockwire will prevent the bolt or pin from backing out. I've inspected hundreds of aircraft engines and components upon disassembly that had loose bolts but had not backed out. It is a tried-and-true method of keeping your knock offs from vibrating loose. Pins are great for quick pit stops in competition and race cars, but lockwire may be more dependable.

Pins work on Formula one cars why shouldn't they work on ours? I think before we make bold statements like this we should consult the manufactorer. In this case kirkham. David has already offered to help you before. Before you make statements why don't you work with him?
Jeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Aircraft safety wire dependability is not a BOLD statement, but tried-and-true method of securing bolts. Pins are great for F1, where pit stops are completed in six seconds. They may be good for your Cobra (they sure look fine), but I'll stick with safety wire. A roll of wire costs about six bucks and will last ten years, depending on how much I change my wheels and tires.

David will figure this one out.
