FIA Wheels
 
There was a thread a few years back about the Trigo FIA wheels not fitting a Kirkham with the front big brake (1.250") option. Does anyone know if the current Trigo FIAs will fit the big brake Kirkhams, or if someone else like PSE makes a set that will fit.

Jason, no,,,,,,,,,the new trigo fia wheels do not clear the front calipers or the tie rod ends without spacing the wheel out 3/8 of an inch. I bought an old set, rears fit fine, fronts did not. I next bought the new style(machined deeper than the old type). They did not fit . I have them spaced and are working fine. I'm going to contact Joe at Kirkham about billet spacers............Ron

When I assembled my FIA a year ago the 1.250" X 12.19" dia. rotors would not clear the ridge inside the Trigos. If you want to stay with the Trigos as I did, you have a couple of choices for the front,
A) Go with an .810" thick rotor and thinner Wilwood Superlight calipers part # 120-7430 R/L (ok for the street, but marginal for use on track days).

B) I went with 1.250" X 11.75" dia rotors part # 160-6902 & 160-6903 with Wilwood SL4R radial mount calipers part # 120-8501-R 120-8501-L and brackets which I redrilled to fit the correct position for the smaller dia rotors.

C) The Trigo castings are extremely thick. If you know of a good machine shop with a mill or a lathe you can have them open up the ID of the rim to clear the brakes.

D) The rears are close, use a belt sander on the outside corners of the Dynalight calipers.

Do not use spacers between the wheels and the hubs.

Additional work and expense, but if you want the authentic look of the Trigos as I did, its worth it.

When I bought my Kirkham late last year, I asked Joe that same "fit" question about the FIA wheels. Joe said the choice was the big brake option or FIA wheels, but not both. I chose the big brake option instead.

Does the clearance problem result just from the thickness of the rotor or is there a different caliper also used with the 0.810" standard brake option? If that was the case, I could get a 0.810" set of rotors for street use with the FIA wheels, and use the 1.250" rotors and the stock wheels for the track.

You should call Joe, but if I remember correctly, the caliper is exactly the same, but just the rotors are thicker. So if you wanted to change rotors and wheels, and pay for both set of wheels and rotors, then that would be the best of both worlds in terms of wheel setups. At the time, Joe had said that the smaller rotors would not be recommended for the track use.

Hello FIA Wheel problem !
I have FIA wheels with BIG Willwood Brakes & Goodyear Sports car
Special Tires front 26.5 8.0/ 15 rear 26.5 10.0/15 HOW IS THIS
POSSIBLE? Ask Thomas Kirkham how he put FIA wheels on KMPS032 FIA
without spacers. This is the Catalog car. Spacers Are Not The Answer !
The Spacer will take away from the number of threads of the wheel nut.
Next look at my photo gallery at at KMPS 030 for the Answer.there are 3
other cars on club cobra that solved this problem. This is a Test, Good luck!

Jason,
Unfortunetly, the calipers are not interchangeable between the .810" and 1.250" rotors. The calipers for the .810" rotors are .220" narrower from the mounting lug which is where you gain your clearance to the ridge in the corner of the front wheel. So, you can not just change rotors to bolt on different sets of wheels.

If you go to Wilwood's website and download the catalog you will see the diagrams and dimensions for the Superlight calipers on pages 30 & 31.

Specs for the SL4R Radial mount calipers and brackets are available on pages 22 & 23.
