The 200 MPH club is a little bit more difficult to join than just running above 200... You have to set a record above 200 to get in. The 427 body shape is aerodynamically worse than a brick. Due to the smaller radiator opening and smaller fender flairs we could actually go faster with a 289 street car body. But if you want to have the fastest FE... |
We had so much fun on Wed. that we decided to come back today (Friday) for more! Pics to follow.
|
and this time you taped the camera switch in the 'on' position ... didn't you :3DSMILE:
A lot of hard work to just get there, and a lot more to get to speed on each run. Well done guys !!!! |

We switched to another camera and fingers crossed it turned out. |
Any lift in the front end??
Tom Kirkham Looks like a clean easy run. Was there any lift in the front end at speed? If you come to R&G do you have a setof custom pulleys that you have on your motor? Not the under drive ones, crank and water pump. Rick L.
|
Rick,
We have a set of 1 to 1 pulleys for the crank and waterpump. Call me at the shop on Monday and I can get a set out to you. Joe 801.377.8224 |
Hi Tom,
Excellent job. What gear were you in and what rpm at 140 mph? What do you think you would do at 6k in fourth and in fifth? Michael |

Perhaps you didn't see Thomas' post above on the rules for the 130 mph club. Here it is again. "Waiting in line... Notice the deep concentration (really apprehension). Also note the the GPS unit tapped to the rear view mirror. Note: that for the 130 class if you exceed 140 mph you do not pass go and go directly to jail. Actually you are disqualified, do not get a time slip, and you don't get to run again." We really didn't want to get have to put a 4 point roll bar in and install a parachute--let alone get disqualified--so we decided to run in the 130 mph club. (Anything above 175 mph requires a chute and 4 point roll bar). Dr. DeHart got a wild hair on Wednesday night (wasn't too hard to convince Thomas to go along) and he literally drove the car out of his garage, into the trailer, and out onto the salt. The hardest part of the run was keeping the car UNDER 140 so they didn't get DQ's. Who knows, next year we may see if a "stock" 427 actually will go 200 mph. Who knows, maybe we will do something even cooler. David :):):) |
no offence ment Dave, just pulling yer chain. I would like to see what a stock bodied Cobra Roadster would do. I think AK Miller ran a 289 turbocharged car into the 160-170 range in the middle 1960s. What the heck, you guys are nuts, build a car just for some speed runs. Add a suecharge to that all billit car, skim the funds for the Land Speed Record car.
|
Keith can you get 850 out of an FE with a carb? fuel injected?
I would like to see it done without turbo or super charger. Dwight |
They are getting into the 900+HP range
Dwight If you have the money, and can live with a short "TERM" motor, they are in the 930+ of HP. RPM limit also in the 9,000 rpms. Cam huge, Ports for heads the size of soup cans, cfm in the 420's if not more. Aluminium rods, biggest bore they can do, about 16-1 compression. maybe a little nitro in the gas tank( only kidding but some REAL high octane fuel ) If you want the 1,000 HP add a small shot on NOS. I would go the FI route for drivibilities and high RPM's over a carb. A/F meter next to the tach and EGT's on the other side. IMO the 3 most important gauges for a high rpm run. I have a big redlight for oil pressure and a 40 psi switch if it drops during a run. Mike Lefevers is the one to ask about assaulting high speed records. His car is in the 300 mph club and he has the 200 mph award. Rick L.

Looks like a blast! It's a shame you had to be limited to 130mph, though. I think it would be great to see a stock bodied 200mph run in honour of Dick Smith. Do you have to have sanctioning body approval to run on the salt or is it possible to do a non-sanctioned run and go as fast as you want? An official record would be nice but if it means butchering and re-engineering the car, perhaps the Cobra community would be happy with "unofficial" proof that a 427 bodied Cobra can indeed hit 200 with the right (Keith Craft) motorvation!:D
