Sunburst wheels on a Kirkham
Hey Gang,
I've got a set of orig sunburst wheels. (Purported to be off CSX 3231)
I want to fit them on my street 427 but the rub on the outside of the calipers.
Anybody have any ideas or experience with this?
Kurt

You have two choices - do a little grinding with a die grinder on the calipers, or have a good machine shop cut a clearance groove in the back of the rim on a lathe. You want to check the thickness of the rim in that area before doing any machining.
I have had to rework wheels and calipers in this manner several times (on different cars) over the years.
regards,
Jeff

Another option might be a spacer. The rims are tapered on the inside...
Just for a check, try putting washers around the drive pins and see if that gives you enough clearance. If that works there are a couple of more permanent options available with out having to grind.

Thanks Tom and Jeff. I'll try the spacers first and consider the grinding deal the last resort.

Tom,,,,Are you making spacers? I still need 2 5/16 or 3/8 spacers to make my FIA Trigos work.............Ron

Sunbursts
Please do not grind/machine the wheels. There are only so many original wheels and if modified/damaged it would be a shame for the guy who may end up with them down the road and want to put them back on an original car. If the calipers are repro, it would be the lesser of the evils to grind them......or try spacers like Tom Kirkham suggests.

I am not a big fan of spacers. It is important that a spacers does not act like a thrust washer-- allowing the rim to turn relative to the hub. This is even more important when the wheel is attached with a mono-nut. Ron 2 5/16 inches is a lot. I would be very nervous making a spacer that thick let alone driving on it.

Tom,
From his post I think he meant two 5/16" spacers, not a 37/16".

Hi Kurt,
I make billet aluminum wheel spacers in 1/8", 1/4" & 3/8" thick and are made with either 5 x 4.5" & 5 x 4.75" bolt pattern.
NOTE: WHEEL STUDS MUST BE LONG ENOUGH TO ENGAGE THE LUG NUT COMPLETELY.......
