Does anybody have a problem with clunking noises coming from the rear end when the axle suspension runs through its travel? It is most apparent when pushing down on the body. I've been through everything and it seems to be originating from the clearance between the Heim joints bores and the suspension mounting bolts, but this doesn't sit too well with me and I've never heard of it. The bolts I used are Grade 8 and the joints' bores sit on the shank which isn't machined to a standard dimension, so there is several thousandths of clearance there. The only remedy I can see doing is to use precision machined shoulder bolts, but I hate to lose the strength the grade 8 bolts provide, and as I said, this issue just doesn't make that much sense. Any ideas?

Get underneath the car and inspect the heim joints for slop and/or binding.

Most of the shoulder bolts are grade 8 or better. Here's an example from McMaster-Carr:
