Bump Steer
I've been driving my Cobra for a couple months since completing it after working on it for about 5 years. Being a chassis nerd, I noticed there was a ton of bump steer in the front end, but didn't take the time to try to do anything about it because I was all wrapped up in assembling the thing and not much was mentioned about it on the Lone Star Forum, so i figured it wasn't a big deal. But the faster I drive the thing, the more it bothers me. Has anyone done anything to address this issue?
Am I correct in assuming the front end geometry is similar to a Mustang-II? I know the steering rack needs to be raised, or the steering arm pivots need to be lowered a considerable amount, and there are kits to do exactly that available for the M-II with spacers, etc. Just wondering if this is some popular "must do" thing I just didn't know about. |
The caster affects the needed elevation of the rack. If you're running more positive caster than the stock M2 alignment, you may need to raise the rack. With a little geometry you can figure out how much. I think you could easily elongate the 2 rack mounting holes and fix it that way, or reduce the caster. The positive caster gives more restorative force to center the wheel at speed, which isn't a bad thing in this short wheel based car. I think I'm only running 2 deg and have no noticeable bump steer.

All Geometry is bad not just bump steer
The geometry on a Lone Star is horrible. Bump steer is the least of the issues. The LSC was designed by a street rod guy and made more like a street rod than a good handling sports car.

Bump steer will also cause the inner side of your front tyres to wear very quickly.
Is there a mod available for the steering knuckle to raise or lower the steering outer tie-rod to a static horizontal position? |
