Gumball Rally
I know this has been discussed before here, but a seasrch turned up nothing.Who's kit car was used in the movie and was the Ferrari also a replica?
|
Racers John Morton and Wes Swan did the stunt driving in the Cobra and the Ferrari.
They used two originals and one replica in the movie. The two origs were CSX3243 and CSX3255 and I think the replica was an Arntz, but I'm not sure. I also believe the Ferrari was a real one. Mr. M can verify this. |
There's a very complete writeup on the cars and the making of the film in a Classic Motor Trend of a few years ago. They located one of the Cobras and the remaining Ferrari and brought them together again for a road trip and the story.
There were indeed two CSX cars, one of which was damaged late in the filming (you can see the nose damage in the final scenes, alternating with the undamaged one...) One of the Ferraris was totalled - or it may have been the only Daytona they had, and after the accident they had to scrounge up another to complete the filming. There are only mentions that "a replica was also used in some scenes" but despite years of interest in the details of this film I've never seen a definitive statement of which scenes, for what purpose or what maker built the replica. This was 1975/6 after all, very early in the replica game. I would ass/u/me that the replica was used in some high-risk situation, maybe the LA river scenes, but it could have just as well been to save the trouble of shipping one of the CSXs to a location - this was a pretty low-budget film. Great movie and the reason my plates read GUMBAAL. |
Thanks.Arntz was the name i couldn't remember.

From what I remember they blew one of the CSX engines during the LA river shoot.
(when it goes backwards and steam comes out the side vents in the LA river) Steve |
