Dan,

My cousin has lived there his whole life and he owns 2 farms and leases another. He tried to explain the mill thing to me but I don't understand it all.
Seems it is added onto the property taxes for schools or something. Anyway I was really surprise at what his taxes were.

I perhaps don't have as many qualms about getting poked by the tax man because I still live in this fantasy world where my $$$ goes to pay for firefighters, teachers, fix the roads, and make sure criminals have a place to stay with a nice iron bar view. Unfortunately I know it actually goes to pay for inept government workers, beautification projects on highways that are in severe need of dramatic repair, office furniture for some congressman tired of last years model, housing and food stamps for people that have figured out how to "work the system", and fighting lawyers representing someone that tripped over a tree root in a state or national park and twisted an ankle and are now want to be considered permanently disabled.

Ron - yeah, I didn't want to go into the property taxes thing - because honestly I don't understand it fully myself. Each county sets it's own millage rate and somehow that generates a tax bill based on some sort of perverse valuation system. The millage rate varies considerably from county to county - which is how the state got into court trouble years ago over un-equal school spending across the state.**)

Indeed, property tax was one item I carefully considered when buying, very tough to get a handle on any given property. No consistent "rules" seem to apply.

In Oregon the rule is don't vote yes on anything, and still your property taxes will go up 3% per year....

Liberals though are always encouraged to pay double what they owe....:D

BeanCounter 01-26-2010 09:12 PM

10 mills equals one penny. I remember as a real young kid seeing red and green plastic coins that were "mills" denominations. Maybe that was back when a penny was worth something. %/

Don't vote yes on anything, got it Scott, words of wisdom! :)

...by the way, I've been experimenting with Oregon wine, man, some of this stuff is world class quality, I'm impressed.

My home is surrounded by vineyards with a cellar just a mile away, if you get a chance to try Silver Falls Pinot it's excellent.

Both tax measures passed, Oregon will be the first state to try to tax it's way out of the recession.

God help us..

Now that you brought it up, I remember my Mother and Father had some colored plastic coins and I asked them what they were and they said for paying on the taxes when we would be in Arkansas for a while. Between jobs we would stay on my Grandfather's farm but I was small and never understood anything about taxes back then except everyone didn't like them.

I like how BHO claimed that he lowered taxes for 95% of Americans last night. I still am trying to figure out how that works. When 50% don't pay any taxes in, there is no way you can lower for 95%. Giving someone a bigger handout is not lowering their taxes. They are not being taxed. Plus if me and the wife (who made less than 90K combined) are in the top 5% then the average tax payer is broke. Pretty much absolute BS IMO.

Let me help you out with that, it's "working families". Factcheck.org, a conservative web site that clearly leans to the right, said,(concerning Obama's position on this issue):

Is factcheck.org a conservative web site because it checks facts?

Excaliber 01-28-2010 02:26 PM

I don't know, is it? Maybe their "independant"? I think they lean right, but that's just an opinion.

OK, fine, but how is less than 90K in the top 5% of working families? Last year my total taxes were $10K and change this year it is almost 12K

Is there a difference between an opinion and a fact ? A liberal would say no.

I'm really not stalking you. It's just that in every thread I read, you're deeply involved, and somehow, whenever I read one of your responses, I get this feeling deep in my loins, I don't know if it's a good or bad feeling, but definitely stimulating, that I have to respond. From now on, I'll try to keep my urges to myself.

No matter how often folks say this or want it to be true so that it fits with their personal beliefs, it is flat wrong.

Illegals get taxes deducted like everyone else if they are working based on false documentation. They do not get refunds, however, because they do not file income tax returns. They walk away from the money even though most, if not all, of it would be refunded due to their low income.

Thus, it is exactly the opposite of what folks want to believe.

Of course, this only matters if someone is interested in the truth. If not, phuk it.
