That was what they told me to do and to put a layer of gravel under the concrete, so I dug down 7". Not sure why the layer of gravel. I had to dig about a 30' trench for my wiring conduit.

Isn't the layer of gravel because it won't compact as much as dirt or something else plus should help with drainage?

Doug,

At the time I didn't know for sure but when I had a friend of mine do my driveway he put several dump truck loads of gravel in and rolled it. He told me that was what it was for. So I guess it is a good idea to put a layer under any concrete that you pour.

Seems to me drainage is the biggest issue, from what I've been reading on the subject.

Most likely, especially with that hard pan we have around here. It is like concrete.
