considering a kart for my son
Some of the best drivers that I know are in the Cobra community, so I will ask this here.
Is anybody here involved with Jr. Kart racing? My 5 year old has been asking to try racing, what is the safest way to introduce him to the sport? I found that Bandimere has a track and runs parent/child days so that we can both be on the track together, is this a good start, or is there a gentler way into it? how fast does a 50cc kart go? Thanks, |

I came in looking for a helmut to go drag racing. The guy took the time to go though all of the safty requirements and his shop is amazing. These guys have Karts that go over 100 mph and race all over the country. He is very well know and respected, part of eKrtingnews roundtable. Been doing it 30 years.

I have a kart that we had fun with years ago. One of the classes of race karting is for the 5HP Briggs & Straton. There are tons of performance parts for them. Cams, heads, carbs, exhaust, etc. etc. Easy to build up.
Most people don't realize that the stock 5Hp Briggs & Straton engine is 205 CCs. A fairly big one cylinder engine. It is rated at 5 HP with the govorer on and limited to 3,600 RPM. Even with no performance mods but just removing the governor to let it rev, you will take it to 9Hp. With the right sproket a 9 HP stock Briggs can easily hit 80 MPH. With all the performance mods available, the sky is the limit. The limitation with a kart like this and with most karts is that there is no transmission, so you are riding around in the equivalent of second gear. Moving the sproket ratio up or down gives you higher top speed but less low end and visa versa. If you click around on the left side of this page you will see some of the stuff available for the 5 HP Briggs. And that is just from Competition Cams: http://www.compgoparts.com/ . |
