World War 11 Dive Bomber Found In Oregon

It is hard to believe that these things can lay around this long before being found. Just two days ago I read about a big bunch of papers being found in an attic near the Auschwich Concentration Camp that were food coupons and such for many of the top Nazi officers and they are still going through them to see what all is in them. Then this morning I received an e-mail complete with pictures of a Russian Tank the Germans had captured and used that has been sunk in a lake all this time. They pulled it out and after a little tinkering the diesel engine started.

I was just reading that. Kind of hard to believe that there are no records of a missing plane in that area. One of the comments posted said that his Father (or maybe grandfather) was stationed near there and told a story of a plane crash that the local Native American tribes told them the location. They had to go in on horseback to retrieve the bodies, and they just left the wreckage because it was just too difficult and costly to try to get it out. He was wondering if it was the same wreckage.

My dad was working on a logging job not far from there in the early 50,s when a B-25 on training hit one of the guylines to the logging spar. We still have a instrument or two from the wreckage around somewhere.

It will be interesting to follow the story.

Very interesting. I liked this quote in the article:
The Helldiver, also known as "the Beast," was a formidable warplane, but Gurling said it was also "plagued by problems."

"In the earlier planes, the pilots were told to not dive for fear the planes would fall apart," said Gurling. "Which wasn't good for a dive bomber."

:D

Doug,

I thought that part was funny too considering that it was designed as a dive bomber and they have a lot of stress when they pull out of those dives. I will be watching for future updates on this one.

A Diveless Dive Bomber, What will they think of next!~!:D

Maybe a bomber that you can't open the bomb bay doors for fear they may fall off and rip the plane apart. Makes the old B-52s look even more superior made.

I've got to start watching the news more often. I totally missed World Wars 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Tommy,

You haven't missed them. I believe it was Einstein that said, "I can't tell you what World War 111 will be fought with but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." Or it was something along that line. I really like history and it amazes me that 60 years after the war, they are still finding so many things that they never even knew existed then or have no records of. Did you see the show about Underground Berlin? That was a feat that is almost beyond believing.

Ron :)
