What's a 'friend request' all about?

Twice on two different car forums in the past week, people I've never heard from before have initiated a "friend request". I'm familiar with the consequences of adding a friend on Facebook, but I have no idea what it means here at ClubCobra. What are the pros and cons of adding a fellow forum member to my friends list?

On this forum's software, their are "Contacts" and "Friends;" the two make up the concept of a 'buddy list.' You can see your current list in your User CP

By adding a user as a Contact, he will appear in your list:

...meant to be an easy way to, for example, send a PM to someone you know, rather than searching for a post made by them or searching the Member List.

When you 'befriend' someone, it simply means that each of you have the other as a Contact.

There is no further personalization or privileges that go with "Friends" in this context...unlike FB and other more intricate social networking sites.
