Finally . . I have been saying this for years!!!
|
Sorry - not possible to overcome stupidity by either gvmt regulation or technology. If you take out the vanity mirrors, women (mostly) will use the rear view. What next - no cupholders. Outlaw drive up service at Micky D's. Require gags on rear seat passengers.
Limit the sound level on stereos so train horns can be heard. |
With any new technology, new toy or fad that comes along, people just can't control themselves and do the correct and safe thing. Government can't stop it by making it illegal and giving people a slap on the wrist.
To control something like cell phones there must be heavy consequences, like large fines, like $500.00 for using a cell phone while operating a vehicle and jail time. Maybe a big old tattoo on the forehead...saying "I'm stupid". Maybe the local "Goon Squad" can work the violator over....Opps ! I'm getting carried away here, but you get the point. Lack of consequences are one of our country's major problems these days, and there's plenty of stupidity to go around. |
I think phones should be required to go into sleep mode when they're moving > 10mph. It would be possible with GPS and/or a simple inertial navigation system.
Modern phones are a distraction a quantum leap higher than vanity mirrors and cup holders. People are dying (kids mostly) and this is an easy thing that can be done to stop it. |
Bill, I agree that the solution lies in stiff penalties and strict enforcement. Texting while driving is every bit as dangerous as driving under the influence.
