Going through some old pics and I came across this one of Bill K's motor that he blew up at Watkins Glen a few years ago. #1 piston let loose.

So why did the timing chain and the timing cover break?

It seems that when shrapnel begins to fly you never know where it's going to wind up.

Did the timing chain break first causing a timing catastrophy, or did a piece of something "foreign" get into the teeth causing it to lock up and pop the chain?

I had a big block Chevy that swallowed a valve, that then split a piston, and then it got real ugly. Part of a rod even went through the intake manifold. The only thing that could be salvaged from that engine was the exhaust manifolds.
