" NASCAR announced today it has entered into a partnership with Freescale Semiconductor and McLaren Electronic Systems to develop and integrate fuel injection systems into the Sprint Cup Series beginning with the 2012 season........"

Not bad, they are finally coming into the 20th century. Wonder how long it will take them to get into the 21st?

And this should be good. I'm willing to bet NASCAR will supply the programming for all teams. Let's see, they currently control the shocks and springs are some tracks. Now they will control the power output even more than they do now.

They should just hand out cars on Wednesday before a race to the teams to give them time to apply the decals and call it good.

NASCAR has become a joke. And it's a shame.

One of the reasons for using carburators is safety. A carburated car can use a mechanical fuel pump mounted on the engine. These pumps are usually low pressure. In the event of a crash the pump stops pumping when the engine stops turning. Thus fires are not continuely fed fuel. With injection an electril pump is usually used to push fuel from the tank to the engine at high pressure. If there is a wreck there is a chance the pump (being electric) may continue to supply fuel and thereby fuel a fire.

BTW - The WWE has nothing on NASCAR.

Bob,

They could always use an oil pressure switch to shut off the fuel pump. I had one on one of my cars and it worked great. In any wreck the oil pressure is going to stop and the switch would kill the power to my electric pump.

Other race series use FI such as F1, F2, ALMS, Daytona Prototypes ( since 2005 ) , IRL, etc., etc. The issue of shutting down the fuel supply was addressed, don't have the details.

" Freescale Semiconductor and McLaren Electronic Systems to develop and integrate fuel injection systems into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, targeted for the 2012 season. Freescale will provide the processors for McLaren’s engine control units (ECUs) that will be used to manage the fuel and ignition systems in the engines for all NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars "

" Yes. All vehicles do. It's not really a switch, per se, but a relay that energizes the fuel pump. When you turn your ignition key, a relay opens to allow your fuel pump to work. The relay is built into several circuits, and if there is no fuel the engine shuts down. This is in case you are in an accident, and smash your vehicle, your fuel pump won't pump gas all over your non-running engine. "

With ECUs that can be controlled from the NASCAR office..."Lessee, looks like Jeff needs a little more power, turn him up and back them dang Fords down a notch"????

:3DSMILE:

Darn Mark, don't start giving them any more ideas. This latest thing about changing the cooling systems for the 500 race is going to cost the teams enough.

Ron

Don 02-15-2011 11:48 AM

Ron......the revision in the cooling systems is to reduce the top speed while drafting, which I " think " is set at 195mph, in the interests of safety, to reduce the probability of a car hitting high up in the track catch fence......believe the cars were hitting 205mph++ in the ShootOut. If a car ever got into the stadiums......

In a separate article, mentioned the ECUs are set & tested by the vendor and given to NASCAR as a sealed unit. Re-test of the ECU etc parameters will be part of the post race tear down, believe it's the top 3 plus random selection. Basically, the same controls as F1.

Will there be the conspiracy theories regarding secret markings on the ECU for selective drivers ?

Kind of like the restrictor plate that Petty had for his 200th win? %/;)

Nascar Motors haven't used the mechanical engine mounted fuel pumps for awhile. They are now cable driven pumps in the fuel cell.

NASCAR is more of a show or entertainment event than it is an automobile racing series so this is just one more step in the direction of total control by the governing body. I now only watch a NASCAR "race" on Sunday afternoon when I have nothing else to do.

Why can't they allow the teams to build their own race cars subject to safety rules, a minimum weight restriction, and an engine displacement limit? Oh sorry, that would allow the teams to actually build and race cars that are not totally controlled by NASCAR.

Who is more fake, WWE or NASCAR? Can someone start a poll?

Wayne

To me NASCAR is more fake. At least the WWE might have some entertainment value.
