" Wireless Hacking With Rainbow Tables - Is Your Network Vulnerable ? "
Recently have noticed a number of references to " Rainbow Tables " Anyone with the technical expertise to provide further comment ? " While you might think of Rainbow Tables as eclectic colorful furniture, those aren't the ones we are going to discuss. The Rainbow Tables that we are talking about are used to crack passwords and are yet another tool in the hacker's ever growing arsenal. " Rainbow Tables: Your Password's Worst Nightmare The Problem with Passwords: The Problem with Passwords - BusinessWeek WSJ has an article, June 23rd, " What Makes a Password Stronger ", but requires a subscription to view. |
Short-winded answer: rainbow tables are part of a 'hacking' process to reverse-decode stored passwords on a system (i.e., server...not your own PC)
Passwords on a system are never saved in plain text; they are hashed (crunched) and saved with an encryption. The table technique is used programmatically to try and reverse the hashing without knowing the encryption key to come up with the plain-text password that was originally used to create the scrambled-saved one. That's all I am allowed to say. Best bet to protect yourself is to use passwords that have one or a few upper case characters and one allowed symbol ( #,$,%,^,&,*). And protection from table hacking is enhanced by having a longer password than normal. |

With WPA/WPA2 using salting the use of rainbow tables is mostly rendered useless.
