Vacuum Cleaner
Looking to buy a new one for the Wifey and have seen all they hype about Dyson's products, we have a pet and although it's used as a sales point; I was just wondering how they work and hold up (not the pet :)). I'm intrigued by the design but sceptical about something like this made soley of plastic. They might get loose at the pivots and joints. Any of you have one that you can share insights on.

My oldest son and daughter-in-law have one and they say that they do not know how they did without it. My daughter-in-law is very picky about cleanliness and runs it about every day. I think that they have had it for 4 or 5 years so far, with no issues. The $ is a bit steep though from what they said. |
We've had ours for about 5 years; no problems to report. The only negative issue for me is that I have to empty the canister three times to finish the whole house. My old Sears model only required one trip to the trash for the same job. Of course, the old Sears model left 66% more dog hair in the rug too...I guess two Labrador Retrievers may be the acid test.

I've had three. The first when I lived in London, so I couldn't bring it back as the power requirements are different. My wife burned out one of the motors by wrapping a pair of panty hose around the beater brush. It was two years old. Two days later a tech came to our house and completely rebuilt it as good as new. No cost. The second I bought over here and gave my daughter when it was three years old. The third I still have and will buy a fourth when it craps out. I'm a convert.

Rick...just do it, and get the animal model.
We have a 500lb Kirby...swore by that sucker for years. We'd use the whole house plumbed vacuum, and then go over the animal areas with the Kirkby...figuring that got everything. We did the same thing...whole house, then Kirby, and went back over it with the Dysen...sickening how much stuff the Dysen still picked up after the other two passes. Course...that's two labs, 9 cats and a bunny that's let out every now and then. My wife thinks I shed more than all of them combined. |
We have one - my wife feels that it's too heavy, especially if one needs to drag it upstairs.

do any of you guys actually use it yourself....?
i have a dyson and i will never buy the limeys crap again....can't vacuum under anything the freakin ball it rides on is huge, to use the accessories....you feel like its gonna break and you have to take half the parts off to use the accessory brush...... the only plus i can say is the catch can design is nice, no bags and no mess |

Check out the link below. My Kirby has 12 lbs suction as opposed to Dysons 1.5 lbs of suction. Built like a battleship instead of plastics that breaks easily.

I have a Riccard. It has been a great vacuum and is just about bulletproof.
Have you every used a Dyson Airblade hand dryer? If their vacuums are like that, they have to be awesome. |
We have a Kirby also. Wouldn't trade it, as it's built with real steel, not plastic. A little heavy, but hey, it's a workout!
We burnt out several plastic vac's before the Kirby, and the Kirby came with a shampoo attachment which is very handy when the dog throws up! Jim |
They work GREAT...when they work.
They have the highest defective return rate among the major vacuum brands, and this is a good reason why you can find so many great deals on refurbished Dysons. So when they work, they work great. That's a plus. Dyson also has excellent customer service, so when it does break, you won't/shouldn't have a problem getting a replacement vac. On the flip side, when the vacuum stops work, it's not such a great thing. FWIW, the pivots/joints aren't the problem. The motors usually burn out. |
