HOLIDAY BLUES
Red, green lights to be banned?
Committee proposal says colored Christmas twinklers too religious

A special task force in a Colorado city has recommended banning red and green lights at the Christmas holiday because they fall among the items that are too religious for the city to sponsor.

"Some symbols, even though the Supreme Court has declared that in many contexts they are secular symbols, often still send a message to some members of the community that they and their traditions are not valued and not wanted. We don't want to send that message," Seth Anthony, a spokesman for the committee, told the Fort Collins, Colo., Coloradoan.

He said the recommended language does not specifically address Christmas trees by name, but the consensus was that they would not fall within acceptable decorations.

What will be allowed are white lights and "secular" symbols not associated "with any particular holiday" such as icicles, unadorned greenery and snowflakes, the task force said.

The group was made up of members of the city's business and religious communities as well as representatives from some community groups. Members met for months to review the existing holiday display policy, which allowed white as well as multi-colored lights and wreaths and garlands.

Ron61 11-06-2007 07:09 AM

:)

I am sure they will also stop using the red and green stop lights during the Christmas season too. If not then someone should sue the city. :(

Then they better turn of the traffic lights, except for the yellow. Yellow is the color of the people that come up with this crap! Spineless too!!!!!!

squeaky wheel gets the grease. Those of us who enjoyed the holidays how they were and never said anything because we were happy were obviously not heard when the minority who did not started complaining. In an effort to "make the people happy" the politicians started doing what the "majority" said (meaning majority of what they heard). Now anyone who speaks up against that are labeled racist. No one wants that label so they just let it happen. The only way we are going to get our way of life back is to stand up and let them call you whatever. I do on a regular basis. I do get called a racist on a regular basis. I just laugh at them and let them know how ignorant I think they are. I was actually told by a black city council member that my racist views against the black community will not be tolerated and asked to leave the meeting. I said ok, turned to my wife and said come on honey lets go we are not welcome. The looks were awesome (my wife is black). Made him look like a complete fool. From my understanding nothing went his way for the rest of the meeting. People followed my lead after I left and stood up for what they believe. Come to find out that most people there agreed with me, but everything was still Happy Holidays because the orders were already placed for the stuff. The meeting was just supposed to be a formality. Repeating the process is the only way to get your point across. If you just accept the change, then it appears that you either want it, or are OK with it.

Joe,

Some do not like to be faced with the truth. Others say one thing in public and another in private. They want 'diversity' in public schools yet send theirs to private schools.

Anyway, there are people who are actively trying to change our culture. Whether it be Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Memorial Day, etc. they find areas to complain or bring litigation.

School personnel are notoriously liberal/left. Once you get a left wing consensus in the schools you will see these types of things happening more and more....condoms......teaching that homosexuals are ok......not teaching civics, not celebrating OUR culture, etc.

I don't want my taxes to pay for anybody elses religious (of any religion) crap. If you want to do something and pay for it yourself - go right ahead. If you want to put up a giant lighted Menorah in town square - feel free - just pay for it yourself. Same goes for satan worshippers who want to put up a giant goats skull.

Steve,

We're not talking about that. You're off the point.

Is this an attempted hijacking?!?!?!

Joe Wicked 11-07-2007 12:33 PM

I don't think Steve is completely off point. All he is saying, from my take, is that he feels that tax dollars should not be used to celebrate any holiday that is religious. The local tax dollars are what is being used to decorate the town. But the counter side of that is that Christmas, and Easter can no longer be government supported holidays. Government employees are being paid to have the day off with tax dollars while all offices are closed. This would require that any official office not be closed on any religious holiday, which would in turn result in less holidays seen by private employers. The American people would have a problem with this. Less time off without having to take vacation. My problem is the people who want the benefit of the holiday with time off with pay without taking vacation (free time off) but they are against seeing/hearing about it. I work with some Muslims that use the time around Christmas to their advantage, and then also take vacation around their religious holidays. I have asked a few how they felt about the company changing the holiday policy. You can take your holidays on any time throughout the year, but you have to work like a normal day if you did not choose the same holidays as others. Out of the 4 I asked, 1 felt that was fair, the others did not feel that they should have to work on christmas if the majority of the company was off with pay for the holiday. They wanted the benefit, but did not want to see the reason they were getting the benefit displayed.

VRM 11-07-2007 12:42 PM

How am I off topic?

I'm not in favour of banning anything, but I just don't want to pay for it.

VRM 11-07-2007 12:52 PM

Joe,
That's also a good point. Give everyone the same number of floating holidays per year. Keep the secular holidays like Thanksgiving, Labour Day, Memorial Day and so on. If the business does not have anyone willing to work on a certain day, then they close up for the day.

Steve

Joe Wicked 11-07-2007 02:33 PM

In theory it is good, but when the Government does not have those holidays, what incentives do businesses have for still continuing to give them out as holidays? When Government goes from 8 to 5 holidays, why would a business still give 8?

VRM 11-07-2007 03:07 PM

Joe,
The government could give holidays as floaters. You take the day you want. A lot of high tech companies have already been doing this sort of thing for years. We deal with a lot more religions than a lot of others do. At my last company we got 5-6 company holidays and another 4-5 personal holidays that had to be submitted at the beginning of the year. Everybody really liked it, and the company got a good deal as well because we had people available to cover for Christmas and New Years. We had a small number of people who celebrated Chinese New Years, so they worked on Jan 1.

But I do agree that there will always be people who try to take advantage of it.

Steve
