sperm donor & 60 minutes

Remember the 60 min episode on the doctor who paid for his tuition by being a sperm donor?

I can't remember the number of kids he could have potentially biologically fathered, but consider that and the following story...

wha oh.... oooooo time to buy an island in the Bahamas

There will NEVER be equality of the sexes.

You know, I read the original article, but I did not see WHY he was being sued for child support. Another reason not to trust gay marriage.

Yeah, I know. Bite me. I have friends who are gay.

I can understand the ruling, the donor essentially took the role of a Father in the young boys life. He wasn't anonymous at all, his mistake.

More disconcerting would be what if he HAD been anonymous and then revealed through a DNA test? THEN ordered to pay support, now that would totally suck.

Mike,
This one is real easy. He allowed his name on the birth certificate. That legally makes him the father, and therefore legally responsible. I would also think that the 'intent' he showed with visits, money, gifts and such did not help his case either.

Being gay has nothing to do with it. A straight couple could be in the same situation if they used a sperm donor to get pregnant, put the donors name on the birth certificate, and then allowed contact between the donor and kid.

Steve,

I thought that the sperm donor places kept all names and addresses confidential. You are always reading of someone trying to find who their biological parent is and they can't get the record from the donar bank. They must have very good cause and a court order to make the bank give up that information. I am not familiar with this particular case and all the stuff not reported about it, but that happens rather often out here.

Having the donor's name on the birth certificate makes it public record.
All the early contacts did the rest. Guess the child wasn't smart enough to
get a scholarship and the mom didn't have enough or didn't feel like spending
it so went after the donor. 18 seems a little old to suddenly get awarded
child support but I guess the educational funding is the key. That'll teach
him to trust a dyke.

I think this is one reason they don't give the name when a donor is selected.

VRM 12-03-2007 09:17 AM

Ron,
In most cases they do, but the article said that his name was on the birth certificate and that he gave the kid gifts and money. That does not make him an unknown donor.
The guy was also a donor for a friend of his -
The kid is now 18 though - I wonder why he has the right to get child support now...

Flip,
A couple of my best friends are 'dykes' - I would trust them before I would trust you.:p

I am wondering how the donation was made? Seems like everyone was very comfie with eachother for a while. Then when money comes into the picture it can ruin the best of relationships. I am also wondering if the adults had a verbal, or written agreement. If not than the doctor is only book smart, and not street smart.

Maybe his "donation" was hand delivered, in person. ;)

Mike,
That is my point. Was the donation directly dropped in the box.....LOL

Can't you just get them to bite you? :D
