Up at Sylvan Harbor by Eureka they use all kinds of engine blocks for the boats to tie too. Every few years they will pull the rusted out ones up and dispose of them and sink a new bunch. I have seen them use everything from 390 Fords to 427 Chevy blocks and 440 MOPARs.

I would concur 427 S/O, the trans is a key reference point here. Agreed, flat head engine, very typical of many boat engines often found in ships with sails.

Only 9 holes played so far in one week. The weather has been 90% overcast and windy. But no snow.
Found that engine rusting away while walking down a deserted beach.

I think its a flathead 4, but not sure. The rust is over 1 inch thick in some places. Note the horeshoe crab shell in the photo's. |

horseshoe crab!!, man I remember those when I fished the west coast of Florida. I thought they were a complete waste of marine life until..I saw somewhere their blood is used for some type of human ailment?...help me out here guys..........

Just found this thread, and yes it is an Atomic, and also called Universal. Were used in sailboats, and forklifts. I pulled the Atomic out of Frolic 4 times, but that is yet another story.........LOLOLOLOL
Sometimes nicknamed the Anemic. I called it the BOMB!!!!!!!

Yea, but the harbors here all use Big Blocks as tie downs for the fishing boats. They know what the Big Blocks are good for. :LOL: :LOL:

Could well be a Continental as well, same basic engine came with many different 'names', classic industrial applications. I recall seeing a number of them on oil well pumps. HUGE oil sump because they would run unattended for days and days at a time. I helped rebuild a couple of Atomics in sail boats here in the islands. Could be a Jeep engine as well, but the bell housing looks more like an industrial or boat application in this case.
You know, only true gear heads can appreciate this kind of stuff... :LOL:
