"Us" who? There's more than one person living in your head? Well, I guess that would make sense since you've got all that free space from "forgetting" things available. Might as well rent out the empty space to someone who could use it for something productive.

Answer the question a$$hole, what was the "meth" angle to the story. If you're so GodDamn in "the know",enlighten us.If you don't STFU.

You know, you two guys really ought to just ignore each other.

I agree with both of y'all quite often UNTIL y'all start in on each other.

Why? After all, you lived in Southern California for 20 years; surely with all the knowledge you have about the greatest state in the Union you don't have to ask such a question. Unless ... you've forgotten the answer.

Again with the "us" thing. "Us" who? Near as I can figure, you're just a "you" not an "us."

Naah. It's people like me that make it possible for others to tolerate people like you. There's absolutely no reason in the world why I should remain silent; it's common knowledge that the only way evil can triumph is for righteous men do nothing and remain silent. And - certainly in the case of this particular thread and in comparison to the person I'm quoting - I'm the righteous man.

So there.

Neener, neener, neener. :D

Your pal,
Meat.

Bill and Meat,
you're not being sweet.

Though your taunts be bold,
they tend to get old.

Such language be damned,
before it gets you banned.

Loves and kisses, Jamo

In the first post of this thread it was mentioned that they wrote tickets for modified exhaust and I think engines modified for racing. It was brought up later about hoping that they dont check our cars (Cobras). What is the leagal standing on modified exhaust and racing components on Cobras. Can they only ticket you for those things if your car was built by a manufacture such as Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Honda, ECT.? How can they say what is STOCK on Cobras since they are not built by a manufacture? They are hand crafted.

Terry

And therein lies the rub...

Much much easier when dealing with modern day ricers and their domestic replicas, with big coffee cans, nitrus systems, etc. Cops aren't going to go out of their way to bug classics or obvious collector cars just driving down the street. In our own San Joaquin Valley, the only time I have ever been stopped in the Cobra was just south of Madera coming home on the 99...the Madera County deputy was building an FFR and wanted a close up look at the car.

The tickets they wrote in Riverside were most certainly to make a point...hassle the general population with your high pitched sewing machines and assinine behavoir and risk getting hassled; ACLU be damned.

Fix-it tickets can be a b!tch to deal with...not something they can make go away by paying a fine.

Call it bias, selective enforcement or reasoned discretion...it works. Our year-long hassling of gangs here in Fresno has been paying off for our community. The gangbangers are now moving to other towns. Same thing when they bug sex offenders in neighborhoods, or make opening porn shops tougher with zoning laws to protect property values.

Any good defense attorney could probably mess with the cops after the fact, but at some point the hassling wins out. Fair? Probably not. So?

"And therein lies the rub..."

I dont understand this comment or what it has to do with the question. I guess either I did not word the question correctly or maybe I just do not understand your answer.

What I was trying to ask is can the police stop and ticket us for modified exhaust or for having a "non stock, racing motor" in our cars? Considering our cars are hand built and not off of a production floor.

Any one else want to chime in on this?

Thank you Jamo for your response.

Terry

I was stoped by a rooky cop a few years ago, in fact I was just leaving a cruise in! He stopped me for a non compliant side exhaust system which requires an inspection sticker to be displayed on the rear bumper. I didn't have such inspection sticker. I informed him I DIDN'T NEED ONE because the original Cobras came with side exhaust. He scratched his head and walked off.

Modifications to your CAR (20" wheels and/or suspension lift kits for instance) require a special inspection AND STICKER. There are no engine mod rules here, no smog check either.

I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for a 'modified' replica Cobra here on Club Cobra. I don't think it's an issue, as Jamo all ready stated in so many words.

From time to time we have some 'show off' burn rubber or whatever either entering or leaving one of our local cruise in's. Who ever it is (and it HAS BEEN Cobras at times in the past) gets an earful and a good chewing out. It is NOT cool, it is NOT tolerated, the 'community' WILL kick your ass if you don't get it. We don't like the heat, we police ourselves.

Terry...my first sentence was in reference to your last sentence...

"How can they say what is STOCK on Cobras since they are not built by a manufacture? They are hand crafted."

In other words, I agree with the point you are making in asking the question. That sets up the context of what follows in the next paragraph, where I opine that it is much easier for a street cop to determine what's after-market on more modern day machinery.

Does that help you understand? :)

Remember, a cop has to have some cause to stop you in the first place...

The simple answer is ... "Yes."

But with this caveat: Police in California can always stop a car for cause. On Cobras, you can generally be stopped for no front license plate, no back-up light, no seatbelt, noise abatement infraction, exhibition of speed (chirping your tires is considered exhibition of speed), failure to use turn signals - and those are just visuals. Usually, however, you just get stopped so the officer can admire your ride.

It is - unless you're burning racing fuel and running a Cobra that sounds like a dragster and the engine compartment is visible (what are you driving around with the bonnet up for?) - virtually impossible for a police officer to stop you for having a 'non-stock racing motor" or for having modified exhaust. From every story I've ever been told or read about in California, the police don't do that with Cobras. Cars that are pollution controlled cannot change anything in their engine - not even an air cleaner box - unless the part replacing the OEM part has the proper certification and sticker. Cobras - especially SB100 vehicles - are not pollution controlled.

So this simple answer is ... "No."

There. I hope that explains everything. :D

Your car can be stopped. It generally can't be ticketed for what you said, and it would have had to have been already stopped and had the engine compartment open in order to see the engine (unless there was a warrant involved). Your question was two parts. You get two answers.

Thanks Meat, I just wanted others to know that the question was now not just for Jamo.

Jamo
"Remember, a cop has to have some cause to stop you in the first place..."

I was told by a cop one time that everyone can be stopped at anytime. There is at least one out of a million laws that we are breaking while driving, always. Its their way of saying that if they want to stop you they will.

Thanks everyone for their responses.

Cops stopping a Cobra does seem to be a pretty rare event around Hawaii. But I am aware of at least two Cobra owners who DID get tickets. One for no front license plate (very wierd, that never happens), maybe he did something else to attract attention to himself? The other was for "Exhibition of Speed" in Waikiki by a friend who borrowed the owners Cobra to cruise the strip. You gotta know where and when to 'show off', Waikiki is LOADED with cops, doing it there is just begging for a ticket.
