Lame Question - Effective Tar Remover

I know this one is lame, but am looking for all suggestions regarding an effective product for road tar and bug splatter removal from my cars (ideally without destroying the paint). Had been using DuPont product for years, but it is no longer available.

Everything available here in California seems to be long on promises but very short on actually being able to remove tar, bug splatter, etc., from the car. I understand that there was some regulation that forced manufacturers to change their formulas; based on what I am seeing, many still have a long way to go.

All tested recommendations appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

If the tar is not too thick use Mothers cleaner paste wax just be sure there is no grit in with the tar otherwise use lacquer thinner sparingly

"Bug and tar remover"

Get it at the auto parts store.

3M adhesive remover works great. You do have to re-wax the area however.

Castrol Super Degreaser. Great stuff. But I heard that you cannot buy it in California. Not 100% sure.

I always use wet paint. Once you do the car with it everything just wipes right off with a little water or Meguiars Quick Detailer. Also the more times I use it, the deeper the color gets.

Thank You

To all who replied. The "Bug & Tar" remover available here in California auto parts stores has been reformulated to meet some kind of environmental edict. While I applaud anything to limit potential environmental damage, the stuff simply does not work.

Think I will try the "Goo-Gone" suggestion and some of the other suggestions.

Naptha, or lighter fluid... WD-40 is also a pretty safe solvant although it leaves a film of oil behind.

butter is good for tar - greasy film then can be easy washed off
