Why are conservatives happier than liberals?

Posted: 02:04 PM ET

FROM CNN’s Jack Cafferty:

Conservatives are happier than liberals.

A study published in the journal “Psychological Science” says it’s because conservatives are better at rationalizing inequalities.

Regardless of someone’s income, marital status or church attendance, people with right-wing ideologies report greater satisfaction with their lives than those with left-wing beliefs. Researchers found that conservatives also score highest when it comes to the ability to justify inequalities.

For example, a conservative might support the idea of a meritocracy – that if you work hard and perform well, you’ll move up the economic ladder… and if you don’t, you probably won’t. But the study shows liberals tend to be troubled by this. Inequalities take a greater psychological toll on liberals, apparently because they can’t rationalize away the gaps in society and thus end up more frustrated by them.

The study goes on to say that this research can be applied to areas other than economic inequalities. One example is that feminists may not be as happy in their marriages as more traditional women because they’re frustrated with the division of domestic chores.

These latest results go along with a Pew poll from 2006. It found 47% of conservative Republicans described themselves as “very happy”, compared to only 28% of liberal Democrats who felt that way.

This, then, is our burnt offering for a rainy Friday.
_______

Also, conservatives are happier than liberals because they get to laugh at liberals.

Perhaps the conservatives just fall under the heading of "ignorance is bliss" ???

IMO, most conservatives simply believe in doing the right thing, no pun intended.

I cannot see the original post... but I will answer the title this way. If CDC is an example of a "happy" conservative... then I am deeply depressed.

From 1993 to 2001, the Pew poll would probably find liberals were very happy. Well maybe not so much the last year or so...

I think some conservatives tend to be happy-go-lucky like G.W.

So what kind of smart humorous remark do you have for those of us in the middle?

This conservative does not worry about what every one else has and wish i did also- i work hard to get what i want and not have the government take it away to give to some lazy liberal who feels everyone should have the same thing in life.
Almost every major city in the usa is in trouble and run by liberals who say what can the government do for me instead of taking care of things themselves.

As a conservative I am a pretty happy guy, keeping liberals miserable is a great pastime!

Well, I can see your post and I agree, you are deeply depressed, but also clueless, a good thing when one is depressed with low mental capacity.

So, now you can see my posts?

I've sort of imagined that grunt, snort, hack, and drool about covers what you accomplish each and every day of your life. Not that that is a bad thing, just your thing. Oh, and perhaps a lot of knuckle-dragging.

I do hope that you continue spending a lot of time posting unprepossessing thoughts here, at least you are not out there scary normal citizens.

I think most conservatives are happy because they have faith. I am speaking of not only the religious variety, but primarily a faith in self. The conservative sees himself in an active and dynamic role in his/her own future, while the liberal looks elsewhere (government, usually) for change/improvement. Experience tells me that if you rely on a large bureaucracy of any kind to improve something you're going to waiting a long, long, long time for results and that in and of itself has to be incredibly depressing. Conservatives also seem to have a more realistic viewpoint about the external forces. We see a disaster like Myanmar and see that it is horrible, but out of our control. Liberals see it as some sort of duty to save them ( the affected populace)from themselves (the junta), hence setting themselves up for disappointment. Oh, and it will ALL somehow be America's fault. **)
'White guilt' taken to the nth level.

I'm so happy to have finally made the list. It's like sort sort of award. I'll no longer one of the little people that sit around and post all day on ClubCobra - primarily in the lounge. Thank you, thank you very much!
