I have to tell you that at a shop where I have access, there is a saw stop saw. What you don't find out till later is the cost of the stop action. Some kind of presurized canister throws a metal bar or disk into the blade to stop it. Can't remember how the blade is lowered... But once you blow the canister, you must replace it at a cost of about $100. You also have to replace the blade which can easily add another $50. But how can you put a cost on lost fingers?? Seems cheap in that light. Plus, there are numerous failsafes to keep you from triggering the mechanism unless it is under real use. Oh, its also an awsome, acurate machine. Love using it.

Your correct Mike, $150 is nothing. Funny this post is the first I read this morning, I just happen to be heading out to buy an old sears radial arm I found on craigslist. I know the old machines are heavy and well made, hope this one is in good tight working condition.

I saw a demonstration on that a while back. The guy boldly put his finger in the saw. It drew blood, but that was it. Nothing a little antiseptic and a band-aid wouldn't fix.

I almost completely severed the index finger on my right hand April 4, 1980 which just happened to be Good Friday. A friend and I were putting in a floor in my basement. We started at 8:00AM and the accident happened when I was cutting the last piece of wood about 12 hours later. We were just about finished, I was tired, and I didn't pay attention for a split second.
I was lucky as Dr Rollin Daniels who was considered to be one of the best micro surgeons in the world at the time, reattached it. It has neven given me much trouble but it sure would have been nice if the blade had that safety device. $150 is nothing compared to all of upset caused by this type of accident. If you notice, I never mentioned pain as it really didn't hurt much at all but it sure was messy. Wayne |

Being in the construction business for 23 years I have a few friends that are missing a few fingers. Ask any one of them if they would $150 to have all ten accounted for, I'll be the answer would be a given. I see OSHA making this madatory in our future. |

They demo'ed this on This old house. The guy held a hot dog (unlike the idiot above) to run into the blade.
Unfortunately the biggest problem is circular saws not table saws... |
What happens when you try to cut some "wet" treated lumber? Does it activate?
Still, a good idea that will be refined and reduced in cost over time. |
