I need a special metal rod...
OK, this is serious...
I need a steel shaft, 3/4" diameter, 30-36" long. Each end needs to be turned down and tapped for a 1/2" nut. Tapping length on each end should be 2". Balance is important. I have looked around on the net, but not found what I want yet. mcmaster is too limited in their selection here. Anybody here can help with suggestions? Mike |
Well with Boeing in the area, there are a number of machine shops that can help you out.
I am however curious about the balance and the 1/2 inch threads. If the shaft is going to be spinning very fast, then threads are not all that good at centering the shaft. Steel is also a little vague. Lots of steel materials out there with different properties. |
Should have mentioned one end was left hand threaded.
The shaft rides in pillow block bearings. Not that high of speed < 1000 rpm Mike |
Any industrial metal supply store should be able to supply you with the steel rod. Any good machine shop should be able to taper and thread the ends.

Mike, If were to pull up the yellow pages for Huntsville and do a machine shop search......would I find one?.

If you are worried about it being balanced, have the threads roll formed instead of cut. No metal removal that way and they will be a lot stronger. Finding a shop to do it might be a bit harder, but not impossible at all.

Or, I could keep asking folks until I get the best answer!
