Obamas on New Yorker Magazine Cover

I don't know how many of you have seen it yet...but WOW. To imagine such an 'insensitive' and non-pc effort coming out of NEW YAWK of all places! Perhaps a bit of Hillary angst? The magazine is mewling 'satire', but I think they may have hit the nail on the head, unfortunately.

bomelia 07-14-2008 07:36 PM

It just proves the New Yorker is a great magazine. I may even go get a copy of that.

It also proves dems have NO sense of humor.

But, get ready for the "fairness doctine" to play out here. McCain is surely next (throw the angry dems a bone will ya!) And when it happens, it will get ugly.

Where the hell is Freddie this political season? Aroooooogha! Anybody checked his home for a funky odor?

I saw the cover and didn't think it was all that funny. It was a dumb and pretty obvious caricature. I'm not into fart jokes either. Steven Wright, on the other hand, makes me laugh so hard I almost can't breathe.

Still, Obama is a politician and he should expect it and learn to roll with it.

Whatta got against fart jokes?

VRM 07-15-2008 12:44 AM

They stink.

clayfoushee 07-15-2008 04:54 AM

It certainly is cutting-edge satire and funny at that. The perceived problem from the standpoint of the Sen. Obama's campaign is that many don't get the joke (or any kind of cutting-edge satire) and already believe it to be true. The typical New Yorker audience certainly got it.

There would be howls from the other side too, when/if the cover of Sen. McCain sitting on a bedpan in an old folks' home appears. Give me a break, Bomelia. When it comes to these types of occurrences in a Presidential campaign, neither side has a sense of humor.

bomelia 07-15-2008 06:00 AM

Hey now Clay, don't slap me before I did something bad. I do have a sense of humor and totally expect it to happen to McCain (way more than Obama). I also remember you fervently defending McCain (the other side).

When I said I thought it was funny, it was because it was funny, not because I am against Obama (which I am).

They did hit the "nail on the head" with this one.
It is tasteless and cruel...but funny in a sick sort of way, but alls fair in these times.
What's strange is, I had this picture in my mind a long time ago..I guess I wasn't alone.
If Obama would change his name to Clark Kent and drove a Cobra maybe I'd feel better.

Sick Bill

I think a funny youtube video would be McCain photoshopped into great moments in history, and with Sympathy for the Devil as the soundtrack.

Just a little??? Hmmm - methinks I should try a bit harder...:p

bomelia 07-15-2008 02:46 PM

I would not say tasteless and cruel. Perhaps tasteless, but not cruel. Obama should have shrugged it off. All they are getting now is analyzed for why they took it so personal.

BTW, the most lampooned president of all time was Ronald Reagan, bar none. SNL would have had nothing to write about had it not been for the Gipper.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the turn of the century and older political cartoons (Nast, etc..), but those guys had a cutting sense of style that we don't even approach. I believe that true satire is a lost art, unfortunately. Some of the Punch cartoons can make you wince in sympathy pains even today!

round_midnight 07-17-2008 03:56 PM

I don't normally comment on topics like this, but I'm going to this time. I think you all may be missing the point. The title of the piece is "The Politics of Fear". It is a poke at those who are trying to cut Obama down by questioning his patriotism, suggesting that he is a Muslim, etc.

427sharpe 07-19-2008 11:42 AM

I wonder how you can be so sure that the stated topic is the real one...in Hillaryland.

There are less than five months until the election, an election that
will decide the next President of the United States
The person elected will be the president of 'all' Americans, not just
the Democrats or the Republicans.
It's time that we all came together, Democrats and Republicans alike.
In a Bi-Partisan effort for America:

If you support the policies and character of John McCain, please drive
with your headlights on during the day.

If you support Barack Hussein Obama, please drive with your headlights
off at night.

Together, we can make it happen........
