Turtle Needs Help

Turtle has been sitting outside for about 5 years on the north side of the house and has gathered some moss and the finish is getting a little tired. He need to be refinished, I am not exactly Norm Abram.

I guess I'll clean him with some Simple Green cleaner and my pressure washer set on low. Then let him dry out ... give him a light sanding with 120 grit and then cover him with a couple of coats of clear marine varnish.

Sound like a good way to refinish? I have no idea what kind of wood it is nor do I know how it was finished when I bought it.

All suggestions from woodworkers will be appreciated.

All flames regarding the Humpin Ho Sisters will be ignored.

Yep,looks like BB rode him hard and put him up wet.

Warren, with all the boats in part of the world,I'd drag Turtle, behind to car, over to a boatyard.
They would be able to quickly tell you all that is needed to refinish that bad boy.

There are special wood cleaners available that would have to be better for him than household cleaners.
Also some sealants would be in order.

After you clean him very well, may I suggest several coats of tug oil.

Have the frogs help you apply about five to six coats. Best if you rub the oil into the wood between applications.

:D :D

BB is better at the oil and rubbing thing. The Ho's would be more than happy to service Turtle though.

Have you given up and decided a fireplace is in Turtle's future ?

:)

Don't give up on Turtle Warren. After a fresh cleaning and new coating, the Ho Sisters may move in with you permanently.

Ron

I have not used the fireplace in 20 years! And if I did, I would probably burn some cheap two-bit frogs rather than a $100 turtle.

Tru - I may try some TUNG oil, but I think I'll skip the TUG oil. Oil slicks are not too good for Turtle's complexion.

Used the pressure washer and gave him a good bath yesterday. Now I guess I'll massage him with a little 120 grit.
