who are watch nuts out there?
 

I saw on one of the other threads some watch comments. I thought I would ask what you guys liked and why. I love old (pre 40s) watches...just my thing. I have a couple modern watches also for daily wear...oris diver is the one that I bang around a lot. so, OK....what do you guys like..?

The only watch that I have that might be of interest is an old Elgin Timer Stop Watch that I believe was made in the early 1900s. It was my Grandfathers and the referees used it when they were calling basketball games. It still runs and works well but needs to be cleaned and I took it to the local watch shop and they couldn't find any place that even knew about this model or how to work on it. It has a sealed rubber cover over all but the face which is turning yellow with age and a wind up stem that you press to start and stop it.
All of my other watches have just been run of the mill Bulova, Timex, and that type. I now wear a Seiko which I have had for abut 18 years and like it, but it is nothing special.
Some of the people on here have some great watch collections.

I recently sold my Rolex Submariner that I bought brand new in the early 70's for around 350 bucks. Last year I learned it was a rare "red faced". I sold it on Ebay for 9000.00 and bought a Luminox SEAL for 350 bucks. Not a bad deal.

Once I got a cell phone, the watch was dropped in the desk drawer. Come to think of it, I don't see many wrist watches.

I'm a watch fan. I don't have a lot of watches, but I have some good ones. Here is my Omega Seamaster Professional Chronograph. Certified Swiss Chronometer. Mechanical Automatic. One of the few watches in the world that you can operate the Chronograph pushers at depth. Watch goes to 1000ft and has a helium escape valve. Work forces me to carry an accurate watch.But the only watch that will survive me is a "G-shock".:LOL:

my last little purchase was a 1915 Paul Buhre that was made for the russian market. He was the swiss watch maker that the Csar recruited to be the offical watch maker to the royal family, etc.

I love watches. Some day, when I hit the lottery, I am going to get an IWC DaVinci...the ones made in the 80s and 90s.....man, I would love to have one!

My dress watch is an RGM moonphase chronograph that was a little present to myself when I graduated from school...

So I'm not alone in my fine madness... Steve Sunshine and I and a few others used to have lonely discussions a few years back.

Buzz, I believe that was my post in another thread correcting someone about the differences between Submariners, SeaDwellers and Seamasters when they were trying to make an analogy about mfgs.

I'm into big watches, and have been since well before their current popularity...fit my size. Been wearing Panerais since 98, soon after they reemerged on the market following Stallone's commission of a few. Having been with Panerai that long, my favorite is my PAM 1 and the Marcos-like collection of straps that go with it...think of it as a CSX2000. Not my only one.

Looking around in my box or on a winder, you'd also find a Submariner Pro like the one above...gotta have that helium valve when I'm in my diving bell. ;)

Biggest, heaviest and thickest one I own is a Breitling Hercules...probably the best time keeper as well.

Also have a Heuer (not Tag/Heuer) Monaco.

Others as well...

Men (at least those who don't live in the Castro or other such enclaves) don't get to wear much jewelry...watches are about it in our modern culture. They perform a function, and the mechanics involved deserve some respect...regardless of price or brand. Combinations of complications (those extra features such as time measurement, multiple time zones, etc.) are amazing when one thinks about what goes into a small case hanging off your wrist. Always cracks me up when someone comes onto a thread like this and smurks about how little they care...yet they drive or lust for a Cobra instead of an old Gremlin.

Pens...another passion.

Jamo, nothing wrong with enjoying fine machinery....watches AND pens.

I am a watch fanatic...got every color of the Tiger Woods Tudors (black, white, green, red, yellow, silver, crimson, etc, etc.)

My favorite is a Breitling "Blue Angel" Navitimer and it keeps time better than any other. The prettiest is the Piaget Polo and of course the Texas Timex (Rolex). The most snobish and for dress...Patek Calatrava and some others that are not so pricey.

Same for pens...got boxes of them...just love the feel of great pen.

I believe a love of fine watches, pens and COBRAS is perfectly normal.

Watches? After starting with Omegas I've switched to Rolex. I've got two, a vintage 1012 Expolorer w/SS Oyster band and a vintage 2-tone Oyster Perpetual Date with 18k/ss Oyster band and Salmon face. For me, these two just about cover the bases: reliable and good looking with anything.

Plus the Casio and Timex plastic jobs for alarms, travel, etc.

I do like the latest Omega Coaxial models as well. Extended service intervals and look good.

One of my cherished watches is an man's pocket watch (I believe it's a train conductor's watch) that requires a key to wind...it's dated 1897....
