RICHMOND, Va. - NASCAR has postponed the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 from Saturday night to 1 p.m. EDT Sunday at Richmond International Raceway because of the threat of Tropical Storm Hanna, series director John Darby has told participants in a crew chief meeting at the track.

With up to four inches of rain possible in the Richmond area, NASCAR officials opted Friday afternoon to cancel Saturdayıs activities.

Don,

With the rain and water they had there yesterday they may not be able to race for another few days. Maybe boats with the car numbers on them. I also saw that they may have rain and bad weather for the tennis tournament today.

With the looming threat of Tropical Storm Hanna, NASCAR and Richmond International Raceway executives, working with state and local government officials, have elected to postpone all weekend race activities to Sunday afternoon and evening.

The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 Sprint Cup Series race scheduled for Saturday evening will be run at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday and the Emerson Radio 250 Nationwide Series schedule for tonight will start six hours later at 7 p.m. EDT. A separate ticket will be needed for each event.

Reportedly, the Sprint Cup race will be telecast by ESPN and the Nationwide Series will be on ESPN2.

Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series qualifications were also rained out and the starting fields will be based on owner points.

The postponement announcement was made by Jim Hunter, NASCAR's director of communications, and Doug Fritz, president of Richmond International Raceway.

The officials indicated they had huddled throughout the day with numerous state and local officials before reaching their decision. "In lieu of the weather, in lieu of the forecast and in lieu of what all of the state, local and city officials have been telling us about the impending rain and high wind, we felt it was the right decision to make," Hunter said.

He indicated government officials are convinced that the winds and rain may well knock down power lines and trees, which could create a difficult situation for the Richmond area.

Added Fritz, "The weather is a moving target and we are looking forward to two great days of racing crammed into one day. Based on the information at hand, I feel we have made the right decision."

The cars have been locked up in their haulers and they will be released to the teams on Sunday morning.

For the Chevy Rock & Roll 400, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards will start in the front row and be trailed by Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton, Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon.

Failing to make the starting line-up were Tony Raines, Sterling Marlin and rookie Joey Logano.

Logano, however, will be the pole sitter for the Nationwide race. Starting alongside him on the front row will be Clint Bowyer. Brad Keselowski and Scott Wimmer make up the second row.
