CHEVRON WARNS CUSTOMERS TO BEWARE OF CON ARTISTS WHO USE ITS NAME
ChevronTexaco has warned consumers to beware of con artists that attempt to profit from its good name. The company acknowledges that some schemers are claiming affiliations with the company, offering money, free products, special discounts and services in an attempt to gain access to victims’ bank accounts. Once account numbers are known, the thieves help themselves to monies online. “It has come to our attention that people have been approached by individuals claiming to represent ChevronTexaco, or one of our many subsidiaries, in a variety of fraudulent schemes,” the company told jobbers in a recent letter. ChevTex detailed the schemes that fall under five categories:

1. Charitable Foundation consumer is solicited to help administer funds from phony charities, such as “Chevron Cancer Foundation” or the ”ChevronTexaco AIDS Foundation”- neither of which exist.
2. Deceased Employee - the individual will tell a person that a ChevTex employee died without heirs and the inheritance can be transferred to another person, for a fee.
3. Fictitious Job Offer - individuals claim they are under contract with ChevTex, or a subsidiary, to locate prospective employees for work on a variety of projects. For a fee of $100 to several thousand dollars they offer to process the victim’s employment papers, tender offers, job applications, and work permits.
4. Free Gasoline Offer - scammers will claim they work for a direct marketing firm that has been retained by ChevronTexaco to offer free products including gas cards, vouchers, or coupons, if the victim pays shipping, handling, or other miscellaneous fees.
5. Lottery Winner - individuals tell victims they can take home lottery winnings from a lottery sponsored by ChevronTexaco or a subsidiary, if they send a personal check or money order as insurance. Copyright 2005, Oil Express.
