A Nice Couple From England

I took the 69 for a fairly good drive today and on the way home decided to go by the dam and see how low the water is. I stopped at the main observation point and there was an older gentleman and his wife there and I went over to talk to them and they are on vacation from England. A very nice couple and they just can't get over how wide open and much area there is around here. I spent quite a while with them showing them places and telling them the history of Shasta Dam. They both said that they had no idea of just how large the United States was until they started their flight from the East Coast out here. They had just driven up here from San Francisco.

The lake is very low and the sand bars are showing out in the center. I took a picture of some cars parked where the water would normally be around 50' deep if they come out. The sun was kind of at a bad angle but I will see later if they are worth anything.

It's amazing what people think, or do not think of other countries. I drove all the way across Brasil, and it was an eye opener for me. Flew all over the Philippines, sailed from St. Maarten through nearly every island of the Bahamas, and most of Mexico's west coast. It's amazing once we start to know a country how little we truly know.

When I moved from Calif. to Florida for good VIA sailboat. We went back to Ca. to get belongings, and my truck. My wife from the Philippines was really amazed at the diversity. We drove from Oakland to Hearst Castle, Yosemite, Vegas, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, St. Louis, and finally a straight shot home to N.E. Florida.

She use to think all of America was snow, and caucasion people with no idea how vast it is. That trip was the subject of many e-mails, and chats on instant messaging. We are a diverse, vast, and lovely country.
