How's business for everyone?
I live in the Northeast and own two small businesses...Just curious how things are going around the country.
Both of my businesses are tech based. One is a Mac consulting company, the other is a telcom cabling business. The Mac business is solid with a couple of standing service visits canceled and a bunch of people scheduling service one day and canceling the next. All in all not a huge change yet. The telcom cabling business is slow. Election week seemed like a switch shut everything off. Just came off an incredible 4 months, had a large NYC network cancel last week and bidding is extremely tight. People are asking for things broken down to the nut and bolt. |
Small construction business and slow as he$$, to stay busy I built one piece of equipment and working on another. Picking up a little work here and there, nothing to get excited about. I started this business after early retirement and thankful I'm debt free. Enjoying the beast a little more and noticed with cooler weather, I need to warm up these new tires before they grip.....Found out real fast when I did a 360 in front of the local coffee cafe...whew!..

I live in north Florida. I work in new home construction and renovations. There is not any where near the amount of work here like there was a couple of years ago.

Ah.
Engineering for a state government entity. Have marching orders from the governor of the state to put $2.5 Billion worth of contracts on the street in 2009. Another $9+ Billion to follow in the next 4 or 5 years. Enough to take me solidly into retirement, thank God. Next 10 years going to be busy.
Yes, I am grateful and humble. This, after 30 years as a consultant, laid off twice in that period, several lean periods with kids to feed. I'll take busy as hell, thank you. :) |
I see the slow down(s) coming before anyone else.ANd i have news for ya'll-it's gonna get worse. We have had NO Christmas rush this year.

Keep'em coming guys...
I'm also as of late getting a lot of calls for quotes which we are doing and then you never hear from people again. They will not return your call, email, etc. Even to say we went with someone else, ran out of money...nothing... |
Logging in the Northwest is terrible, I have contracts and have a couple of scheduled layoffs coming in the next month.
Paper mills are closing fast, now that the liberals won it seems there is less need for Kleenex. The only bright spot is export logs, China BUILD BABY BUILD! |
Retired. Business has been flat at ZERO for almost 6 years.

I saw in the news yesterday that many doctors that have private practices are going to be closing and some that work in the HMOs are going to quit. Two more businesses here closed last week and another is going to lay off most of their people and seese if they can survive until the economy turns around. I now see people looking on the ground for pennies.

I used to work at Delphi...need I say more???
I'm at an auto manufacturer now and well, my group is short on people. I just hope we don't change plans. :D |
I sell business research
for the university in east central alabama and can go over the state if the contract is big enough, and we are slow, cities, counties, business are all pulling back. One city i recently did a proposal for took my proposal methodology ,re-wrote it into an rfp and sent it to all my competitors.Haven,t pulled in a good contract in six months. But, the general economy is good here, unemployment is low, but climbing, construction is level, lot of folks work in auto manuf. plants, tier one, two, three, four suppliers.Another point for american auto. manuf., is labor costs has taken rd funds away so our products are not competitive in the market . Jap. cars are the best, european, next best and american cars ,last as far as quality. We drive Buicks, mustang, and chevy truck at our house--get good service from lesabre, and no qualms from mustang.Put 411,000 miles on park avenue once--good car.Country is hurting, but most of the root causes are caused by washington.Will-alabama

Will ... interesting comment about a city taking your proposal , rewriting it and sending it to your competitors . Had that happen to me some years ago , so I started being as vague as I could get away with ... and when pinned down , I put false data , circuits that had errors in them and sized components wrong . If I got the bid , I just corrected the errors .... if my competitor got it using my stuff .... well ... tough $hit . I actually had a company try to come back on me to rectify a problem my competitor had using my sizing calculations on the hydraulic motors . I bet you can guess what I told them !
It`s a shame that business has sunk to that level .... I can remember when things were done on a handshake . |
I'm in the medical business, treating pain. Been very busy, slowly increasing each year. Good thing there are alot people in pain. The more people suffer the better it is for me.

I've been called that before, as my job usually entails inserting large long needles in various places of your body. Actually, when I'm finished, the vast majority of the people I have seen are doing better from compared to when they originally came to me, and are much appreciative of that. |
