You have to laugh

My father suffers from dementia, which by no means is funny. But anyone who has ever taken care of someone with dementia knows how difficult and frustrating it can be, so sometimes you have to laugh at the seemingly crazy things they do to keep your own sanity.

Here goes...
My mother made out all of her Christmas cards and put them in the mailbox for the postman to pickup. My father thought the mail had come and brought all of the Christmas cards in and proceeded to open them all!

Time to start all over again. You can't make this stuff up!!!!

Oh, man, Jams,

My wife does most of the work around the house and I'm the one that pines for tradition, so I usually do the cards. The task can at times seem endless if one has other things to do. So I shudder over a redo.

It is funny though. I hope your father had a sense of humor too, if he realised what he'd done. That can be the hardest part, watching someone lose their grasp and their fear become the only part that sticks.

No matter what, smile and tell him it could happen to anyone. I think smiles stick.

Have a merry one.

Wes

Wes,

Once in a while he realizes what he does and gets down on himself but most of the time the family just goes with the flow or like you said tell him it could happen to anyone.

My mother is a saint for dealing with him 24/7. It is very difficult!

I've been going through all this stuff with my mother for the last 5 years. I tend to get frustrated at times with her antics and goofs, but her smile and kindness always brings me back to the thought of her being in charge and raising a bunch of kids and running the household.
It's good to laugh at things she does along with understanding how frustrating things are for her when she can't remember or do things like she use to. She got mad when she could'nt understand why something is happening...like why a new roomate is moving into her room with her, or why that dirty old man that sits across from her at dinner pays her too much attention. That dirty old man actually thought she was pretty hot at 93 years old...now thats kind of funny and heart warming.

Thankfully, she trusted me and accepted whatever I told her.

Bill
