If you own a dog...
...and shop at Costco, listen up. This is NOT bad news, but something you should pay attention to. I have been buying Kingdom Pets Original Chicken Jerkey for my Springer. He absolutely freaks over these things. Tonight, my wife went on-line to search for other products (like beef jerkey). Well, the crap hit the fan for a moment. Apparently, for a short period in 2007 (aug-sep) a number of dogs were dying from renal failure after using the product. Yup, you guessed it, Made in China. But after those dates, nothing. So I went to their website (www.kingdompets.com) and browsed around. Took no time at all to find a link to Lab Results. And there, they post REGULAR lab results on an almost weekly basis. Guess when they started? Yup. Sep 2007. My guess is it was melamine. In fact, the ealiest lab results FOCUSED on melamine. Unfortunately, I could find no stories (yet) about what exactly happened.
So the point is, know what your dog is eating... and if you are using this product, then stay informed. I would hate to stop buying them... Olie loves them so much. But if I hear any more stories... then they are off the table. Mike |
They also just found some of the salmonella (sp?) bacteria in some dog foods that contained the tainted PNB.

Mike,
I saw in the news yesterday that China had executed two people that were involved in the melamine mess. I believe they were in the latest milk scandal and all of that is really hurting China's economy, especially now with the United states not importing as much. I have always bought my dog food from my vet and they supposedly test it every 3 months at the labs to be sure it has nothing bad in it. I will say I have tasted it and it tastes better than some of the food I have gotten lately at a few of the restaurants around here. I used to buy dog food at COSTCO but quit when they had to recall some of it a long time ago. Ron :( |
I buy dry food, big brand stuff...but my Golden actually likes what I eat better, so we're both happy.

Two high quality dry dog foods I have used are : Taste of the Wild , Bison & Venison with no grains ... just meat and lots of veggies and some fruit and Omega oils and Blackwoods Lamb and Rice . Both are American made and came highly recommended by my Vet and several breeders in the area . Another is Solid Gold . Yes , they are on the upper end on cost , but my friend was worth it .
My Vet had a handout in his office that rated about 50 different foods and you would be surprised at how badly some of the "name brands " came out in the tests . |
Mike,
Our dog died from eating food we got from Walmart that was tainted. The day he died our next door neighbors dog died as well. (Nothing in the yard they got to) We had the same vet (oddly) and the vet was surprised the dogs had the same symptoms. I had already buried my dog and would not exhume him for an exam. However the neighbor did. Sure enough the poison was in the food that some was as of the time still undigested. I was told what the dog had eaten and the lot numbers on the can. Sure enough we had fed our dog the same brand and lot number. Before it was over the vet told us there had been over 60 dogs die from this lot number that he knew of at the time, and could verify. My dog was not counted since i refused to 'dig him up'. Walmart refused to remove the dog food (or even the same lot number) from the shelves. On a different note. On two different occasions we have purchased "Sam's Choice' Ruby Red grapfruit juice. Both occasions the contents had high levels of petroleum inside the juice. You guessed it. They refused to remove the drink from the shelves. Edited to add: BTW: This incedent with the dog happened in 1992 |
Buy Breeders Choice made in AMERICA never recalled- no fillers or buy products.
most store brands contain fillers and lots of garbage. Want more details pm me. Those products at your vets not bad, but the vet gets a kickback for selling them so he has a monetary interest in selling them, not just a pure ethical one.. The one's you see in stores that starts with an I is pure garabge. read the ingredients. Solid gold is a great product. My wife has been in the business12 years and knows which product is good and which one just advertises more often. joeg (Smokingcobra) |

Made in America, great brand tip, Joeg. Out of three dogs we have one left, the oldest but smallest, a Maltese (the other two were a pair of Dobies). Something is making her sick lately but it might be just age (about 17). She seems OK most of the time but occasionally barfs or gets the trots. Never did before. Who knows. She has one eye left and it's blind, or down to shadows only. She's as deaf as a post. She still plays and bounces around if she thinks she can lead someone to fill her dish, but she can't find the dish too easy and runs into walls often. Never gives up though. I hope I got that much heart towards the end. I suppose we'll be thinking of getting another dog soon. Feeding her/him American sounds like a good choice. The alternative would be to grind our own dogfood plus scraps, I suppose. I wonder if a guy couldn't almost come out on that pricewise anymore? Maybe food for people is cheaper and safer. Wes ... |
I feed mine a Duck Formula that is Royal Canine and I get at my vets. It is made in the USA and tested on a monthly basis. Both the canned and dry food. The dry food is a potato and duck formula and I have used it for about 25 years with no problems. It costs quite a bit more than buying food at the store, but after watching my neighbors feed their dogs and cats what they got at the stores around here I wouldn't take it if they gave it away. Some of it smelled spoiled when they opened the cans and it looks like slop.Never had a sick dog from anything but age and gall stones.

Royal c is another good product those stores brands like Iams are pure filler and junk, but they advertise alot and people think its good

If you lock both your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car, which one will be glad to see you a half hour later-----(Smoking cobra)----

My favorite fridge magnet says "I wish I was half the man my dog thinks I am".
Mixed breed pit bull and shar-pei. A size 4 body in a size 7 skin. :) |
You can buy glucosomin and condrotin ( not sure i spelled that right) for older dogs with joint and muscle problems and after a month or less you will see a big differnce in them. our 12 yr old bichon could not walk up stairs-we put him on food and treats loaded with those items and now he is fine. the vet wanted to give him cortisone shots. Many dogs that get sick, get so because of all the shots they get from the vets. Certain raw foods are the big thing now-no fillers or unwanted drugs in that.

Quote Maurice: Mixed breed pit bull and shar-pei.......You gotta be kidding..Right?.
Although!, I was setting at a red light a few years back and look over to my right, there was a dog with a German Sheppard head and a dachshund body...no kidding. |
