12 volt digital TV's?
Are there any 12 volt digital TV's on the market today? I have a small 12 volt analog TV on our boat that I would like to replace with a new flat screen digital unit but I haven't seen any. I could buy a converter box and keep using the old TV but I would prefer to get a 14" digital flatscreen. Any ideas?

I haven't seen a 12 volt digital TV listed anywhere. Maybe if you did enough searching you might find something. I go to a tech site that has some pretty knowledgeable people on it about the new TVs and everything. I will ask them if they know of anything like what you want. Ron |

I am not up that much on TVs, but from what I have seen in the Automotive market, most are using 115VAC TVs and using a 12VDC-115AC power inverter. You can pick up a 1000 Watt inverter for under $100 if you shop around online. Simple installation, you just connect the cables to the battery, and it has a couple of plugs on it, but you can extend it out to a panel mount that looks like it belongs there. 1000 Watts can run a microwave, and a refrigerator. If you try to run too much on 1 of these, you will pop the circuit breaker on it, so be sure it is installed in a place that is accessible. I am planning on installing a 4-500 watt one in my truck with an outlet in the front and rear seat consoles next to the Cigarette lighter power outlets. This would be good to power DVD players or laptops on road trips. Also eliminates the need to get car chargers for everything, as your regular charger now works. |

My boat has an inverter which I could use for a 110V TV but I was hoping to be able to find a 12 volt unit. Thanks, Wayne |
Not sure on the larger TVs then for you. I did see a few smaller ones on the link tcrist posted. I can tell you that the Plasmas will draw a lot of current and will not be a good choice either way (if they make one like that). LCD would be your best bet, If a 19" is big enough, then there was a couple of LCD TV/DVD combos on that link that are DTV ready.

How about a laptop with a 12v charger or low cost 110v inverter? Most laptops have built-in DVD ...and plug a low cost tuner card into it for broadcast TV. Something like this can also double as an economical large screen GPS. Great for campers and boats (if weather-proof isn't a main criteria). Wes ... |
I guess that I will look at LCD TV's and just plug it into my inverter. I was thinking 12 volt as the present analog TV is 12 volt but that is not really necessary since I already have an inverter on the boat.

Wouldn't an analog to digital tuner solve your problem? Current draw on one of the assorted boxes out there must be very low and if you hurry you might still be able to score one of the $40.00 off coupons and save a few bucks. I don't think any manufacture currently sells a DC analog to digital converter box so you will still need a 12v to 117v AC converter for the digital tuner. I'd guess RackShack carries an inexpensive step up transformer that will easily power a digital converter box. I wonder if any of the digital converter boxes available use 'wall warts' for power? If any of them do the converter box might be set up for 12V DC already.
