Anyone looking for an engine?
I'd post this in my "Cool cars" thread but this car is for sale (not by me but a dealer).
Of course everything I post has a story. I'm on the way from a bike shop to get a throttle cable for my Shelby Cobra Go-Kart and on the way I catch this cool car out of the corner of my eye. Some words caught my attention but I had to attend to business so I called the guy today and went down and took these pictures with My Crappy Cell Phone Camera. This is what I saw: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...%20500XL/1.jpg Cool, I'd better go back and look some more: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...%20500XL/2.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...%20500XL/3.jpg There is a little rust showing in the trunk http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...%20500XL/4.jpg Interior is, I'm told, original http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...%20500XL/5.jpg So to build up the suspense, this is what caught my eye and made me go back: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...%20500XL/6.jpg and here it is: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...%20500XL/7.jpg It's a 1970 Galaxy 500XL convertible. 429 CobraJet engine and matching number transmission (asserted by the owner that traded it, pending verification). The dealer claimed an "on frame restoration". It's been painted recently, but not well - they didn't take off any of the trim or weatherproofing gaskets. It was originally yellow but not this modern metallic flake color. Owner claimed 15K on rebuilt engine. It's probably a ream-and-clean re-do since all the top stuff looks original. I thougnt the A/C looked new. I did see a little rust starting in the trunk (previous pic), and there is some in the engine compartment that actually looks like battery acid splash (so you'd want to figure that out). The convertible top is (relatively) new and I think not the best fit. The 429CJ engine would be perfect for a Cobra project :) The car itself would be a nice restoration project that I don't think would take too much work. He wouldn't give me a price but the engine/trans alone is probably what, $10K? Some friends and I drooled over the 1965/66 version of these at the BJ acution in January - the 500XL is a sleeper - the originals had the 427 sideoiler in them. They were family cars, but dad hardly ever lost getting away from the stoplight. Anyway, the car is at a dealer in Longmont, CO. PM me if interested! |
What leads you to believe it is a Cobra Jet ?
