Last Hubble Visit Ever
:(
Kind of sad for me to see the end of the Hubble as I have enjoyed the pictures it sent back. But at least it will be around longer than I, if nothing happens to it. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090518/...shuttle_hubble Ron :( |
It is hard to believe it has been in service that long.
|
My wife laughs at me when I sit for 5 hours and watch the equipment changes by the "wrenchers". Or maybe its because I talk to them through the whole process. %/
|
My wife just says I am "Gifted" and then walks away shaking her head. She does not understand why I find that stuff fascinating.

;)
I have always been fascinated by space and wish they would do more exploring there than wasting the money and time on fighting every war in the world. I was surprised at the length of time Hubble has been up also. Have any of you been watching the TV series, "Life after Man?" It has some really interesting things in it. Ron |
I saw a program that was like 3 hours long last year, but not the series. I did not even realize that they made it into a series. Is is still on History?
|
Ron,
Here is that World Wide Telescope program I told you about. http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/Home.aspx. It is free from Microsoft, but it is actually a good program. From my understanding, Microsoft is backing it, but did not actually do the development. I guess that is why it works without crashing |
The next space telescope (since it is paid for with OUR tax $$) should come with a web app that lets users (average Joe the Plumber tax payers) point it where they want to point it. As for moi, I will point it the fabulous constellation "Angelina Jolie". You can see her without hearing her.

The pictures are great.
Sitting and watching the guys work...I will side with Warren on this one. It's WORK! I am sort of hoping with the ungrades we will see even better stuff. And that doesn't mean turing it around and looking at Joe mowing the lawn. :D :D :D |
There is supposed to be a new one that is either in the final stages of being built or is on the way that will be smaller but much more powerful than Hubble and will be in an orbit that is say beyond anything we can reach, so it will be there working only as long as something doesn't break or wear out. They claim the pictures it will send back will really be something as it will be able to see so much farther out into space. I have only seen two small articles on it and then it just seemed to vanish so maybe they have shut that project down.

Mmmm. Geek Porn. I would so like to do an entire wall with this.

strictly,
did you check out the worldwide telescope program? There is a lot in there. |
I was at Nas Moffett field, and helped to load the Hubble telescope onto an Antinov 124 it had to stay in a specially built clean room for a few years after the Challenger accident, it was supposed to be sent on the next flight, but they were all stopped for a number of years after the accident. I have always been fascinated by space and the photo's coming back from the Hubble were astounding! I hope the next generation will give us all a glimpse into our universe far beyond that of Hubble.

I am also one of the big Space and NASA supporters. I think the money is better spent with NASA than quite a few places here on Earth. AND, we have gotten a lot of "trickle-down" benefits from space budgets.
