GM Sells Hummer...but who bought it?

I think I saw something yesterday that spartan motors bought hummer. They already make military vehicles, and ambulances, fire trucks things like that.

Imagine the accident rates with all those people unable to see over the dash! Probably just going to outfit their military with them. I guess we can say bye bye to the Hummer plant in Shreveport! :o |

GM has an agreement to sell its Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. of China, said a person briefed on the deal.
Sichuan Tengzhong deals in road construction, plastics, resins and other industrial products, but Hummer would be its first step into the automotive business. |
If GM is smart..they'll get payment in Yuan. It will be worth a lot more than a greenback soon. :(

There's something just wrong about Hummer being owned by a foreign company. What happens now when the army needs another fleet? Buy from China??:mad:

The M998 or HMMWV is not built by Chevy, it's a splinter group of AMC hence the name AM general, the hummer on the other hand is a different animal all together and it's based on the suburban chassis and the H2 is on the Blazer chassis. Other than a basic body style they have nothing in common with the military version.

AM General also makes all the mail jeeps. Originally Kieser, Willys, and Studebaker then finally part of AMC.
As I understand it the H1 was exactly the same as the military version (sold under the AMG label) when GM picked it up they re-tooled to use a truck frame. (H2) AMG discontinued sales to consumers as part of the deal. Used to be a AM gereral dealer close to where I live (also sold Mitsubishi). |
Hmm! Learned something new. I'd assumed that GM had purchased AM General when they started producing the civilian Hummers.

I've been thinking more and more about this deal, and it makes perfect sense. China gets all of the modern designs from GM (since Hummer H2/H3's use common chassis/powertrain/ect with other GM models) and gets the years of hard R&D done by the US for a cheap price. My bet is in less then 5 years, we'll see an automaker from China using our designs in newer models produced and sold by a Chinese company. It's not the first time China has sold copies of US technology.

Kieser, Willys, and Studebaker, came together with Hudson to form AMC, and when AMC suffered a leverage buy out, ( corporate piracy ) by Chrysler, only to get their hands on the Jeep line up, they then set out to systematically erase AMC from all history, they even went so far as to destroy all records, when the AMC hobby asked to buy the molds and records, they refused and destroyed everything, they even went after hobby vendors for using the AMC logo. Any way there was a military division of AMC called AM general. the general comes in because General motors' was there biggest supplier of components. As for the Hummer ever having any similarity to the military version, it's not true, the chassis is completely different, there were some civilian versions sold, Arnold was the first to get one, and when the popularity of them took of GM obtained a license agreement with AM General to build a civilian version, the only similarity of that one was the body, the military version uses independent suspension, inboard disc brakes, a gear driven reveres drive spindle, in other words the drive axles are turning backwards when the vehicle is going forward. The closest thing to a recognizable GM part in the HMMWV is the 6.2 diesel engine and the 700R transmission.

So the Chinese get Hummer - it looks like Roger Penske might end up with Saturn.
With his luck and skill it will probably beat Toyota sales figures in 5 years. Steve |
