Geithner get laughs from Chinese students

"Chinese assets are very safe," Geithner said in response to a question after a speech at Peking University, where he studied Chinese as a student in the 1980s.

His answer drew loud laughter from his student audience, reflecting scepticism in China about the wisdom of a developing country accumulating a vast stockpile of foreign reserves instead of spending the money to raise living standards at home.

If one actually comprehends what one reads in the article, they are questioning the wisdom of their own government for investing in foreign reserves instead of spending that money on socio-economic programs at home.

FWB 06-02-2009 09:24 AM

no Buzz. reread it it states the laughter was because geithner said the assets are safe.

the safe aspect is what was funny.

Not the way I read it, sorry. I'm just going by what the quoted statement actually says the laughter reflects, but you are welcome to choose whatever interpretation floats your boat.;) You could decide they were laughing because his fly was down as well, but that's just not what the article says.

The Chinese are among the smartest and most realistic world commercialists. Geithner must have forgotten where he was and forgot to switch off from spin mode. The Chinese have made it clear that they will not continue to bailout the U.S. economy with Treasury notes. They know exactly what Obama's $11 trillion record-breaking deficits and surging national debt mean. The next couple generations of Americans are already in hock. Naturally, when Geithner told them the dollar and the U.S. economy were stable - they LAUGHED! They don't intend to go down with the Titanic.

On the afternoon and evening news they made no mention of the audience laughing at him.

That does not mean it did not happen.

“I can hear you laughing at the fool. The rest of the world hears you laughing at the fool. And the people who ... knocked our economy and country down, will hear all of us soon....

.....but we won’t be laughing."

The article reflects the reporter's [Glenn Sommerville] opinion of the reason for the laughter. His opinion in NO MORE or less accurate than yours, CDC's or mine. If reporters would ever go back to unbiased reporting, maybe their writings would mean something again. But for now, reporters report from the left or from the right, both 100% dismissable.

With these totally safe Dollar assets, Why is the non-taxpaying TresSec THERE? To RE-Assure about nothing?
You would think that with all the lying the obama admin does, they would get BETTER AT it.
They are incompetent at,
LYING,
BUSINESS,
BANKING,
ETHICS,
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY,
and
CHANGE!

Geithner...once was a head-honcho REGULATOR in charge of the pile that turned into a steaming pile of not good...and now he gets to 'fix' it! What a joke! **) Almost as bad as Paulson (who ran one of the big investment houses) getting to throw his old firm (Goldman-Sachs) a few billion here and there for a bailout. What the heck ever happened to 'conflict of interest'????? %/
Why aren't the bankers, CEO's and Boards of Directors getting shat on like Rick Wagonner?? Could it be that they are the only ones who really know how deep the pile is and have to be kept quiet? Or is it their ability to fund the next campaign...with TARP dollars?!?!
No wonder the Chinese are laughing at us.

HI Cobra 06-02-2009 12:41 PM

CHANGE

Actually they seem to be doing quite a bit of that. Problem
is that it is not for the better.

I never offered a personal opinion regarding the reason for the laughter. I stand by my comprehension of the article. The O.P. presented it as support for his assertion that the Chinese students were laughing because they think your president is an idiot. The article as written in no way supports that. It plainly states that they questioned their own Government's judgement. If you think the reporter was lying, that's a different topic altogether and open to pure speculation based on what each person wants to believe.

By your reasoning I can link to an article describing someone complaining about the smell from a pig farm and claim that what they are really angry about is Dick Cheney's aftershave.

My my aren't we the touchy obamafite. Did you miss reading these words?
" His opinion in NO MORE or less accurate than yours, CDC's or mine."

That is NOT inferring that the reporter is lying, anymore than you are lying or I am lying. That IS saying that the reporter is stating HIS opinion as FACT.
An American reporter knows WHY Chinese students are laughing at an obvious and oblivious liar, Timmy, not the reporter, NOT damn likely! But present some, any, evidence with merit that the reporter's opinion is fact and I will accept it

Buzz 06-02-2009 03:01 PM

LMAO!! You think calling me names will somehow scare me into changing my position? If you're this childish now, you must have been a real winner in junior high.
I really don't care to debate the reporter's honesty. The OP presented his assertion as fact and linked to the article as supporting evidence. The article and the quote he highlighted do not in any way support his assertion. Period.

If people want to fantasize that they were laughing for some other reason contrary to the one written in the article, fine - fill your boots. Maybe he had an egg noodle dangling from his chin. I'll take a pass on the kool aid, thanks.

Sorry about your comprehension.

Typical nasty banter on another inflammatory thread... yet another one that spoils the nature and reason for the Lounge.

The thread title is stupid and baiting... and I am changing it.

One last polite request from the moderators... Choose your wording and topics carefully. Thanks to a few recent threads, the bar just got raised as to what we will let fly and what will be dumped.

It is frankly is not worth the effort to continue to have to constantly monitor the repetitions of few apparently very unhappy visitors. I am still baffled as to why they choose to spoil this site.

...just can't have it any more.

thanks

My apologies, Ron. I am guilty of knowingly taking the bait and in effect that's no better than the guy who lays it out. I will clean up my act.
