True story.
In 1976 when I lived in Tempe my uncle had a rock shop on the Apache Trail Highway between Mesa and Apache Junction next to the gift store that is still there - I can't remember the name of it right now. Anyway, I'd gone out on a Saturday to see him because I had nothing better to do. After closing we went to some bar in Apache Junction. Outside there were 5 or 6 horses and an equal number of old-style off-road vehicles (4-wheelers). The cowboys working at the working ranch had come in for a cooler. Right inside the door was what looked like an old coat/hat rack and on it were an equal number of gun belts with guns with real live bullets in them right below the sign that said "leave your guns here". Cowboys had their chaps and stirrups on too. I doubt the ranch is working ranch any more. Probably full of houses built of ticky-tacky. |
Second funny story. I was the chairman of the town's planning commission and was at a board meeting to give an update for something and one of the things on the agenda was an ordinance that made it legal for the town to post "no concealed weapons" on their property. Colorado law is inclusionary - unless they specifically disallowed it on town facilities it was legal. So I asked the sheriff (who we contract with for police services) a couple of questions after the meeting about why. Eventually I asked, "so, if I wanted to I could walk down Main street with my pearl handled Colt 45's on my side and you couldn't do anything about it." "Yep, but please don't say that too loudly."
It turns out that UNCONCEALED weapons are uncontrolled, just like in Arizona, proprietors are supposed to have their own policies (like the bar in AZ). Noone does, but I don't think I'd want to be the first to test this theory. Who says the old west is dead. |
It's a nice secure feeling that you get when your packin and everyone around knows it. It doesn't matter if there 10 ft. tall, tough as an ox and bad to the bone ..the old six shooter sort of equlizes things and keeps those pesky jerks from messin with you and your family.
Don't knock it until you've tried it....yes, Arizona is the best place on earth. Old Bill |
