1967 Shelby America Cobra Info Needed.

My name is Jon Miller. I'm in Montgomery Alabama. I have taken on a project for a friend. The vehicle is a Cobra built by Shelby America Inc. Los Angeles CA., 1967 Cobra # Az87574, Made in USA. The vehicle had a 289/C4 and now I am installing a 351CV4/C4 and will require fabrication which is cool and will be fun, but I could use some more info about it.
I've been told this company is out of business. I was wondering if you had any info regarding this vehicle and this company?
The vehicle is primarily British running gear with a Jaguar IRS rear end and an MGB front suspension and is well built.
I was researching the possibility that someone has the build data or any information on this car. Also looking for advice on a set of headers and pipes 1 7/8". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Jon Miller

Lots of red flags coming up from your information. If it is a true 67 Shelby Cobra it should have a CSX number on the tag.

The Shelby America tags can be bought any number of places and installed on a Cobra, but it doesn't mean it was manufactured by Shelby American. You will need to figure out who the manufacturer was to start with if you just want information.

If you could post some pictures, it would be helpful to identify the manufacturer. The more pictures the better- engine compartment, body, chassis, dash and cockpit area, suspension pieces, etc....

Have fun with your project.

This is a 1980 fiberglass kit car almost 30 years old. A replica of a 67 Cobra. The Tag on the dash says Shelby America not American and the vehicle is almost all British. No one has jerked around with this car. It had a 289 in it. It was slammed in a curb and this took off the pan and the owner cooked the mains. He has purchased a cleveland engine and I am installing it. There is no CSX # on it, the plate reads, Shelby America Inc. Los Angeles CA., 1967 Cobra Az87574, Made in USA. I will post pictures ASAP.

The plate is misleading. The manufacturer is neither Shelby American nor Shelby America. You need to supply pictures to identify the actual manufacturer.

Hi Jon

I live in Florence, Al northwest corner of the state. Their are a couple of Cobras in Montgomery that I know of. Jag rear end and MG front, it could be an old Unique. Like everyone said pictures would help. The vin # Az xxxxx, maybe titled in Arizona at one time.

Sounds a lot like a certain early NAF that was floating around the Arizona/Nevada area and listed on ebay on and off for two years (yup, two years) before it was sold some time ago. Owner insisted it was a true Shelby American because of the VIN plate saying so.

Post some pictures of the engine compartment, firewall, dash, trunk, and suspension/frame. We may be able to tell you exactly what you have on your hands afterwards.

I believe Arntz used those suspension pieces too, probably Butler as well, but I don't know the years that either were in business. The 289/C4 combo would probably be odd for an Arntz though.

My bad on the dash plate. It does read Shelby American. Suffering from OACRS (old age can't remeber *$!#). I apologize for that. I have posted 3 pictures of the Cobra. Still need info and possible header help.

Thanks, Jon

It's not a Shelby, it's just got a fake Shelby VIN plate which anyone can buy.

Where did you post the pictures? There was nothing in your gallery when I checked.

MillerJS1 07-20-2009 09:40 AM

I'm still getting the hang of using this site. I posted them in my profile.

MillerJS1 07-20-2009 10:37 AM

Ok I have them in an Album.

Most users will look for pictures in your gallery, which is accessible with the camera icon below your user name in a post. Also pictures from your gallery can easily be added to a posting.

As Bill suggested earlier: "Post some pictures of the engine compartment, firewall, dash, trunk, and suspension/frame. We may be able to tell you exactly what you have on your hands afterwards."

You also might want to post higher resolution pictures.

The high mounted GM (I think) steering column should be a dead give away for someone in the know.
