a displaced MN member says hi from CA
its' been a while since i posted last.. lots has happened. thanks to the volatile airline industry, i had to move from minnesota to the san francisco area....had to leave my partially finished cobra behind to be finished by clubcobra member dave engle...(hi dave...i can't tell you how much i appreciate you taking the reins on this one...)it broke my heart, but if you have ever seen any work that dave did, you would understand why i left my baby in his hands. tinybubble, if you are seriously considering buying a cobra, i would highly recommend talking to him... mr garey...sorry i never got to see your yellow monster... i saw the pics though...nice toy!! the future of my cobra is uncertain... registering a 500+ hp cobra in california is a daunting task...i am not sure if i COULD even make the car legal here.... but if i were to register it in nevada....or in my dads' name in minnesota...well...we'll see when the time comes. meanwhile...enjoy the cruising season up in the great white north. i'll just be hanging out down here driving the saturn.... Sorry to hear about the move. I made a similar move from FL to MN about 3 years ago. I just hope your move experience turns out as positive as mine. You are welcome back in MN any time. Give us a heads up and we will arrange a cruise in your honor. Good luck with the long distance build and CA registration. I've read some of the posts regarding CA registration, and it sounds like an uphill battle. Will it be easier to register in CA if the vehicle is already titled in MN? Mark |

Bring your car out here with all major receipts, not from any one place, and use SB-100 if you can get one of the 500 numbers in January that 4,000 people are waiting for. If you register it back there, then you just have to do it again here using SB-1578 which also uses the same 500 numbers that are available each year. Bring lots of paper work showing the car is a kit car and not a turn key, and then a couple of suitecases of money. Go to the DMV web site and it will tell you the steps you have to take. I can also give you a site where you can go to print out each step and also gives the Memo number the DMV should have as some of their people aren't familiar yet with this procedure. Also register by the year of the body. The choice is the owners, engine year or body year. Pre 1966 and the engine doesn't matter as that was before emissions requirements. Ron :) |

If luck is with me, I'll see you in line at DMV on 2 Jan 05. Getting one of those 500ea SB100 #'s, and following all of the instructions, would be the keys to getting your car on the road. Like Ron said there will be many people after just a few #'s, so get in line early, & pack a lunch! jdog:) P.S. Speeking of waiting in line; Once, after having to discipline an inmate, his last words to me were: "I hope I live long enough, when I get out, to piss on your grave". A short time later he returned to my office to say: "Never mine pissing on your grave, after all this time in prison, I don't ever want to stand in a line that long again!":LOL: I must be real 'Gashole' material!:D |

I saw your car today at Dave's place. I would have had a very difficult time leaving it behind, but it is in good hands. The only problem I saw was that the distibutor was on the back of the engine. Perhaps Dave can fix that for you :LOL: Mark |

mark..you made it over to daves? im jealous!! i havent seen my car in months!! (2000 miles away!!) i plan on flying up there in the next week or 2 to see dave and my family (in that order!!) To all the 'Kalifornia' residents that have replied here, thanks for the info....i will be posting more info requests for this january free-for-all you are telling me about. sounds like a real party at the dmv!! We do not have an organized group with events and meetings. I just go to the local cruise-ins like North St. Paul on Friday nights. Kenyon is having their Rose festival next weekend which includes a car show. Dave lives on the street in Kenyon where the car show takes place, and I am planning to head down there if the weather cooperates. Bowtie, If I go over next weekend, I can take some pics for you. You are allowed to bring pictures of your car to this state with no penalties. Of course if you are in the San Francisco, Berkley, or L.A. area, some porno would help. Have the picture blown up to full size, mount on a piece of plywood and trim to give the cars shape. They used to do this for CHP cars down near San Francisco and then set them alongside the highway. Until you passed it, they looked like the real thing. :) Ron **) |
yeah...i live right next to jack london square in oakland....so you're saying i need to get a large piece of plywood, some scissors and tape, and put the finished project where??? (another note....I would look awfully silly jogging down 880 with a picture of my cobra in my hand....just wouldn't be the same!) Bowtie

Make it like one of those sandwhich board adds that you see people carrying and put one on each side. Then you can jog down the street and it will look as if you are in your Cobra. Heck, living where you do, you will have a good chance of getting car jacked even with the fake Cobra signs. Be sure to include gun ports on each side. :LOL: :LOL: Ron :) |
i know what you mean ron61....just yesterday someone stole my @#%%$# mountain bike.....they had to cut through 2 separate 3/8 inch thick steel cables to get it, but they put forth the effort to take my pedal machine from me.... i'll be moving soon. i work at the sfo airport, so i'll be looking to buy a condo over on the peninsula somewhere south of the airport... (by the way...i tried the sandwich sign thing....got a ticket for obstructing traffic....i hope driving my cobra will be more fun...) Bowtie

Sorry to hear about the bike thing but not at all surprised. Now you know whay I an other people that had to come down in that area to work have CCPs and always carry a gun. A good alarm system is a must if you are going to live in some areas. The Cobra will be a blast once you get it ready. You will have to make a trip up here when you have achance and see some of the nice country of this state. At least what hasn't burned. :LOL: Ron :) |
ron61...i guess i was wrong in thinking that CA didn't allow civilian CCP permits...I thought about trying to obtain one in light of the fact that my wife and I like to go bicycling in some relatively remote areas. (my thinking was that a Hi-Power would go a long ways toward discouraging an aggresive mountain lion...) On the Cobra front, i was thinking that if I bring it down here (still may sell it in MN when it is done) that maybe lojack would be a good idea. when i go to sleep at night, the last thought in my mind is usually driving down hwy 1 in the snake with wifey... the weather here is SOO much more conducive to enjoying my project than that in MN.... i am currently trying to sell my Wide Glide on craigslist.com...might have to drop the price a bit. if it sells soon, that will be the deciding factor in whether or not my car will become a CA resident... thanks for responding so often!! talk to you soon..
