Drove it for 10 years and sold it for $ 7000 and today a #2 will sell for $ 70,000 or more. Great car, ran like a Rolex, never had to touch the Webbers. I have owned several 911s since then and today have a 1997 993, the last of the air cooled cars and it is appreciating in value. I am no expert, but I think the 911 has been in continous production longer than any production sports car except the Corvette. If you were to count the 356 , longer than the Corvette. Back in 1955 I had a Chevy Bel Air hardtop with a " power pack " small block V8 (I needed a back seat in those years) and thought the 356 Porsche Coupe was a glorified VW (it was) and funky looking and wouldn't give one a second look....Well....this month I bought one !!!!! How times change..I don't need a back seat now days.....bart :) |
Old Porches ?
Can you say "Overpriced German Corvair" ???

Cars are worth what the free market determines they are worth.
Porsche's competitivie history and reputation don't need a defense. |

Many years ago I bought a '66 911 that had a '69 911S engine in it. Webers and Bosche ingnition. The shifting mechanism was very vague on the early cars and it took some time to get used to it. I had just moved out of my parents home, got an apartment; I was living large. About 30 days after I got it I was racing a guy and at the top of 3rd gear at about 6800 RPM I went for 4th gear and stuck it in 2nd!!!! Floated all the valves broke several rocker arms and crushed the ring lands on all the pistons. THAT was an expensive lesson. Having worked exclusively on British stuff up to that point, I was amazed at the quality of the castings, forged rods and various other components and most importantly their PRICES!!!

The June issue of Road & Track is devoted to the 911. The articles by Peter Egan and Sam Posey are worth a read and devoting time in reflection.
