Distributor Gear Pin breaking

Have a 351w that has snapped the pin that holds the gear on the distributor shaft from spinning free twice in the past 50 miles. Anyone have any idea what is causing this to happen. Both times it happened was at a light and making a left turn. Car died about 600 feet down the road. Just coincidence maybe?

Is there any play between the gear and shaft?

What about binding in the shaft bearings ??

I had one break while idleing at a light.

No idea why.

Just out of interest, do you have a HV/HP oil pump?

Also, I wonder if the oil pump has ingested something solid?? If you lose a third pin, I would take a look at that pump, unless there is something very amiss with the distributor bearings.

The first pin is probably in the pump............
