2005 track dates at Loudon, Lime Rock, Watkins
Hi there-
I'm going to be taking my car to some of the SCDA events this year at NHIS, Lime Rock and possibly Watkins Glen, and was wondering if any of youse guys are going too? My car is brand new, and will be getting 2 days of shake down at Summit Point in WV in May. Thinking about doing Lime Rock on 6/18, and Loudon on 7/11 (wish me luck on that one- it's my anniversary! :3DSMILE: ) Doing Watkins is dependent on me getting a trailer and tow vehicle- so that's a little iffy at the moment. I'm open to other dates too if some other Cobra guys are going. And now back to your regularly scheduled winter... -John |
John,
If you're interested our tentative Open Track Schedule in the northeast for 2005 is here: http://www.cobranet.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000183.html |
Thanks for the link John...
Let me ask a question though... if I run with you guys can I still wax my car? If I get the chance, I'd love to make it out to Watkins on one of the Cranky dates. Likewise, feel free to come on over to NHIS in NH if you get the chance. -John |
John,
Wax to your heart's content...rumour has it, it makes the car go faster! :D :D :D |
Check with "Club Cranky". Those guys do track events throughout the north east. I think most of them live in NJ. They are a great bunch of guys. You should see their bufet at lunch time. Do a search for "Club Cranky" on the Club Cobra site for info. You could also do an internet search and you should find their website.

Thanks for the plug Mike,
We are not serious racers we just go for the fun of high speed road course laps. www.clubcranky.com End of the day heavy drinking is incouraged but not required. If your wife or girlfiend is insulted by crude antics and foul language, best to leave home.( You were warned) |
Thanks- and happy to hear you guys do your drinking AFTER getting off the track
I'll keep checking the web site to see when you guys are running. Would love to check it out. -John |
John Not knocking SCDA, but you should also check out COM at COMSCC.org. Especially for a "newby". The best driver training around, and the prices are very fair. Can be difficult to get in NHIS events as a student if you don't sign up immediately. You should also be aware that both LRP and NHIS have similar tight noise regs, and FE's with stock sidepipes usually don't make it without some "help". Pocono (ugh) and the Glen have no such rules. I've run them all for years, e-mail me if you want to talk.

Thanks Don. I checked out COM, and they run a little too far South for me. Have run at NHIS before (not in a Cobra)- so not too worried about that. The sound thing might be an issue, and am aware of it- did some checking with other Cobra owners about Lime Rock and think I'm going to be ok, although all it takes is one dude with a clip board and a big set of keys at the track to ruin my day
You going to be running at all this summer? I see you're a former owner.. we need to work on this situation! Thanks again -John |
The noise limit at LRP is 89 db and is usually measured at the inside of turn 1. Typically when I am going into turn 1 at LRP I'm not on the gas.

"COM a little too far south for me". I don't understand. NHIS is their home track with several dates, all season long.
Bob... The new rule at LRP is 2 tries and your out. Never seen them inside Big Bend, it's not a loud spot. Usually at the short shute leading into the left, Start/Finish, along west bend area, or foot of the downhill, places where you're on the gas. They know where the noise is. The FE makes the "wrong" type of noises, where a small block seems to get away with murder. John: Want to work on my former owner status? I could use a couple of sets of tires for the new car ;). Don |
I stand corrected. I was basing my reply on what I had seen at Porsche Club events. I can tell you that the LPR staff can be extremely rigid regarding "the rules of the track".

Interesting, I know someone in NY who runs Cobras at Lime Rock and didn't think it was too big a deal. Guess I'm going to have to explore this a little more with him and with Lime Rock themselves. First thing I might try is looking up what the regs really are...
Don- yeah, you're right, I had COM confused with PDA or somebody. I had checked them out, but the NHIS dates are a little out of my summer "window of opportunity." I am going to give them another look on your advice. And as far as tires... only have odds and ends, all for street/daily driver type vehicles. Whatcha' need? Something in a fifteeen or a seventeen for a new Cobra perhaps? -John |
Just an update: I'll for sure be running with SCDA at NHIS in Loudon on 7/11. Would love to see some other Cobra owners there! Still not sure about doing Lime Rock, as the noise limit there is indeed 10db lower than NHIS, and, apparently, enforced. As much fun as hanging out with Club Cranky sounds, Watkins is just too far (father of 2 kids, 9 and 7- got to spend as much time as possible with them before they're too cool for dad )
I'll be at Lime Rock in April doing Skip Barber, so I guess I'll get a first hand look at the situation then. Anyone know what, exactly, the deal is with track noise limits? For instance, if Lime Rock is 89 db- is that at a set distance (ie 50 feet, 100 feet)? I also found out about a potentially fun event called "Cobras in the Mountains" being held over at Stowe VT July 22-24. More info can be found at http://www.englandinn.com/events/cars.html I will be there for that, as it's only about an hour or so away. Hope to see some of your Northern New Englanders out there this summer! We're only a few weeks away from drivable roads up here, and I'm getting antsy! See you round- -John |
My friend and I typically run LRP, with SCDA, PDA, and BMW Club.
We currently have dates : 4-9-05-PDA -LRP, 7-17,18-05 Pocono North, 10-8,9-05 Watkins Glen. Will be for applying to SCDA for 6-17,18 LRP. Also lookking into some time trial events at NHIS, Poc, or LRP with other clubs. |
Hiya Clark... thanks for chiming in! Can you tell me anything about noise limits at LRP? You have any inserts in that 427 pipe organ of yours? Seriously, though, I am looking for someone with 1st hand experience with a Cobra at LRP- have heard some conflicting "advice" about the 89db limit and how rigidly it is enforced.
Would love to run with some other Cobras around here if I get the chance... -John |
John;
Haven't run the SC there. But have first hand experience with a guy with an orginal Slab side converted to race duty. We ended up packing his pipes with steele wool to get him to 89 dba. Personally, I thought that thing was louder then my big block (mild steele pipes on my organ)! I run the Coupe and never have had issue with the LRP "Noise Police". Maybe because of the Two-into -Ones, it definitely has a differnent tone. My friends Tiger , because of the deep tone of the glass packs doesn't set off any alarms as well. Do you know the dba level of your car? If not find out and adjust with temporary baffeling. Talk to you later. Clark |
Made it to NHIS in Loudon on Monday July 11 (my anniversary no less!--- whatta gal)
Ran with SCDA- overall I was pretty impressed with how they managed to run the day and get everyone on and off the track. Hot, perfect day at the track. Drove around with Miss Daisy: my instructor for my first few laps. Really good, talented and YOUNG dude who knew his stuff. Even let him take the Cobra around a couple times. I would do SCDA again. If any other CC members are interested in joining me, drop me a line. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...18549NHIS4.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...18549NHIS3.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...18549NHIS2.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...18549NHIS1.jpg -John |
