Spun distributor gear

Out driving today and as i excellerated from a light the car died.
Luckily i was able to roll into parking lot.
Had the same problem 2 summers ago. Eventually back then found a very tiny piece of metal in the oil filter after having it happen twice. Both times we dropped the pan, drained the oil, new filter etc. Probaly from the initial engine build, so we finally took out the pump and found the piece.
Have to leave for a business trip sunday so no time to fix it or find out why. Any suggestions as to what is causing it. As a side note, at the light did not realize i was in 3rd gear till i started to go, dropped it into first, chirped the tires and i think i gave it some gas then it died. Did I over stress something?
Thanks in advance for your advice as 'im gone for a week.

It would be helpful to know:
- Brand of distributor (e.g., Ford, MSD, etc.)
- Type of distributor gear (e.g., steel, iron, brass, plastic)
- Type oil pump (e.g, standard, high volume, high pressure)
- Type and brand cam (e.g, Comp Cams hydraulic roller).
