Powder coating
As I've said before, 707 lived right on the water in Massachusetts... and most of its bare metal surfaces show the result. I plan to spend the winter buffing, stripping, and corrosion-proofing everything, whether with a coat of WD-40, wax, urethane paint, replacement with stainless, etc.
I will have a pile of brackets and such to powder-coat. Anyone have a recommendation for a shop in the Sac area that does good work at a reasonable price? |
Gunner, I've heard many great things about these guys over the years. They have different levels of finish. I've heard from one friend that wanted a nice finish, but not concours, and he was very satisfied. Then I heard from anbother friend that was doing a Pebble Beach-type restoration and he loved them as well.

Yes, Sherm's has a very well deserved reputation in the custom and resto world. They're expensive, but worth it when you need the best possible street or show plating.
I don't know if they do powder coating, though, and if they do, it's likely to be pricey. Quality powdercoat doesn't require anything like the skill and expertise of plate and I'd be happy with "serviceable" for my alternator brackets, etc. |

Powdercoating Technologies in Folsom is reasonable and they do good work.

If you have acess to a old stove (not in your house!) there are very reasonably priced do it yourself powdercoating kits available.
You can do any small parts that will fit in the stove & accomplish quite good results with them. Craig |
That's kind of funny - my time as a knife and sword maker came to a lurching halt when I never solved the problem of having a large heat-treatment oven. I don't know if I can do any better with a powder-coating oven. It's a great idea, though, and I'd be the kind to go around powdercoating EVERYTHING including the dog...
I really just need a few brackets done and I think that's it. I'll overpay the folks in Folsom, I guess. |

I'm not sure what type of environment you are in. I highly suggest you make a run to the local west marine and get some CRC put it in a spray bottle and spray liberally on the engine and electrical componets. It will last all winter and wont drop oily junk like WD.

This is a generally warm, dry temperate climate - winters have been getting longer and wetter in recent years, though. Corrosion is not a common problem on equipment that is stored out of the weather.
707's problem is that it lived next to a salt-water inlet in the Northeast for the last three years, and there is accumulated corrosion to deal with and stop. I've found a wipe with a WD-40 rag after buffing off corrosion scale is enough to protect most galvanized and even bare steel parts for quite some time. |
These guys powder coated my entire chassis, as well as all of my aluminum panels, and the price was not bad at all.

I think most places have a minimum if you want a specific color that they don't shoot often......I just leave the stuff there until they do my color.
They are always shooting black though. |
Hey Gunner: We just finished building a powder coating oven, it will easily do all your parts. You are welcome to come down, fire up the sand blaster, then powder coat and bake your parts. Just throw in a few dollars for firing the oven. I figure to learn from your or our mistakes as we begin to take this part on.

I had the four alternator brackets powder-coated this week. I didn't want to drive out to Folsom, or even the Orangevale end of Folsom where all the shops are, so I looked for a closer place. The first one, just a mile away on Auburn, turned out to be gone, moved, something. So I ended up over at Powdercoat-It! on Roseville Road.
I'm used to these places being kind of funky and somewhere between laid back and grumpy at being disturbed. I walked in, the proprietor came bouncing out of his office, and when I held up the ring of parts and asked what their minimum was, he said, "Black okay? Fifteen bucks." He wrote it up as I admired some race car frames and other interesting things - all beautifully done - and when I asked about turnaround, he said they closed at 4:30... it was 1:15. I told him the next day was fine. Parts were ready, they had carefully avoided the stud I marked "no coating" and the finish was perfect. I can recommend these guys. |

I'll second www.powdercoat-it.com I own a custom fab shop in Lincoln and we use them all the time. They also do ceramic coating
