California Registration

Can anyone shed any light on the California registration requirements for a kit Cobra? I'm way past deciding whether or not I want to build one - that's a given at this point. I'm just trying to anticipate what speed bumps I'm going to encounter ahead of time. I've got the insurance issue handled. Now I need to figure out the registration.
Thanks, Phil

This DMV website should answer your questions.

Re: Registering in California.

Hey Phil,

we hear its getting a bit easier now with SB100 and SB1578, etc. There is a nice page on cobratrader.com to review. Good Luck. http://www.cobratrader.com/registrationCA.html

Thanks - both of these sites have helped me better understand the registration process in CA. Phil

I just finished the registration on my cobra... and I find there is a hidden roadblock for you just around the corner.
Look up and study the sb708, which if passed on the 25th of this month will eliminate both sb 100 and sb 1578 exemptions. Look up the posts on the lounge forum. As I understand it, we will all lose our smog exemptions and have to resmog every 2 years. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Mark,
Yep, sure enough - sb708 can certainly throw a wrench into thins. Do you know if there are any organized efforts opposing this bill?

what ya get?

Hi Phil,

so did you go ahead and buy or order a Unique then? Ken mentioned he talked with you a while back. Did you find some wheels for it yet? Ken has his up for sale, if you did not know. He is advertising it for sale for less than it can be built for... barely has 3300 miles on it since he built it. He says it's too loud for him and draws too much attention... silly guy. oh well, I bet he will miss it once it's gone. Good luck on your project. See Ya.

pgermond 06-19-2003 09:46 PM

Good to hear from you.
Ordered my Unique the first week in May, as well as a 406 and top loader from Southern Automotive. If all goes as planned it should arrive late August. Yeah, I saw Ken's post on Cobra Country - $38k is a deal, for sure. I haven't gotten the wheel situation resolved yet, but the Weaver's are helping me out in that department as well. They say there's a guy in PA that might sell his PSE's (couldn't get a return call from Phil at PS Engineering after many attempts - must be nice to be able to ignore business opportunities), otherwise looks like I'll go with Compomotive's. Not my first choice, but........ Too much noise and too much attention?!? That's the point, isn't it?
See ya, Phil

has anyone started an effort to oppose that bill?

I hope sooo... as an avid motorcycle rider as well as (hopefully) a future COBRA replica owner, I am for sure against it.....

Also any other input on regging as a 65/66? pm me

I saw another post about allstate but they will insure if its a 66 or reg as a SB100?

NROTOXIN 06-24-2003 10:14 PM

SB 708 is a dead issue, you will have to wait till next year to reg under SB 100 as ALL seq #s are gone.

will they put you on a waiting list?, someone else in the forums was mentioning that there was nearly a 2 year wait.. that we may have to wait until 2005....

sorry for all the questions, i am considering buying a kit that is 90% complete... reasons being its titled as a 66 cobra in california already.... as well as has all new donor parts... its a classic roadster cobra kit from 98'.

any input from you guys would be greatly appreciated...

steve

I'm no expert on the subject, but if the car is already titled, what's the problem. As far as a waiting list - that's the first time I've heard of that - if it is accurate, DMV will surely find some way to screw it up!.
Good luck.

She aint pretty right now, but I think I can see some potential.....

let me know what you guys think....

joea 06-25-2003 11:11 AM

I said I might have to wait until 2005 becuase I am on a wait list for an ERA. The delivery date for my kit is early next year. If I miss the 500 available slots for registration, then I will have to wait.

xlr8or 06-25-2003 11:16 AM

I think you can get it registered in another state (go buy an acre in NM and a PO box) and then bring it into California under SB1578.

brainbugnj 06-25-2003 12:03 PM

Sorry joe, I mis understood... I see....

I will definately be doing some research on SB1578.

xlr8or - check your pm...
