Hello Tom,
I must apologize the way I came across last night. Now that I've looked at your side, I must agree. If we paid 15k+ for 550 hp and we're getting only 370 to the rear wheel, I see what you mean. My mind apparently was at the East Cape chasing roosters in the surf! Btw, that beer offer still stands. The in-laws are at Del Webb. Cliff

The answers are so all-over-the-board, it's confusing. And, going all the way back to the beginning of the thread, I mostly wanted a better sounding Cobra.
The extra HP was just a bonus. Now,I just want the carb to match the exhaust. If it does now, I'm happy.

The Pro-Systems carb is the best that I had between three that have been on the 427R in the Superformance. The other two carbs were the original 750 mechandical secondary Holley that came on the engine. The installer jacked that one up pretty good and it was way out of wack. The dealer thought the Holley Avenger 870 would be a good choise. THat one was fine if you like tons of lag when you nail it and less HP. I think it would be nice for an RV or pulling boat trailers though. I then called Pro-Systems and asked for the fastest carb with the best throtle responce. I got it in the form of the 1040 cfm mechanical secondary unit. He asked my zip code to look up weather for tuning the carb on the application. I got it, bolted it on and drove. It put a grin on my face from ear to ear. It's the fastest responding form any rpm, fastest in general, cruises at 1800 rpm in .64 5th gear on 28 inch tall tires with 3.73 rear gear and fricken hammers at the strip. Flat out it rocks! I also bought another carb from Pro-Systems for good milage and to be really street friendly. It never made it on the car because the faster carb works so fantastic.

No prob 209.I'll be here wanab5150@comcast.net
Greg....might I inquire on the cost of that fish tank with jets?

wanab5150 08-19-2009 10:34 AM

I've gone back and forth on jets, squirters, and set the floats, pump arm and idle screws this week. The carb was a little out of adjustment everywhere but not bad. Idle screws were at 1.5 turns and I ended up at 2 turns out for max vacuum. I settled on 71 Pri. and 74 sec. jets.

I did have a slight surge on top and a slight hesitation just as you open the throttle from stop light to stop light. The 71 took care of the hesitation. I upped the squirter to 40 from 37 but it didn't seem to take care of the hesitation so I went back and the 71 was the ticket.

I went up to a 75 on the Sec. and the surge was gone at WOT. I went to a 74 then 73 and the surge came back slightly so I settled on the 74.

I drove up to 2000 feet and it ran just about the same. Holly states one jet leaner for every 2000 feet. It ran good so I must be close. I will be in the thick air of Monterey/Aptos for a couple of days next month. If it exhibits any lean symptoms, I will up whichever jet I need to and that will be it. If it runs good there I'm done.

It never ran as good as it does now and the throttle response was always a little sluggish. Now, I don't know if the new mufflers caused the need for the carb fiddling or the stock pipes did also. I'm not going back to see!

I've done a ton of motorcycle carbs and the Holly is quite complex in the adjustments compared. I've spent at least 20 hours on the carb this week between changing and testing, and feel I have a grasp on the symptoms Holly's produce. I'm quite sure if someone threw a Holly at me I could dial it in now. This was fun and challenging and as my dad used to say "It runs like a striped ass ape!" Not sure what a striped ass ape look like though.:D:D

Striped ass ape... Too funny, my dad used to say the same thing.

Anybody know if it's possible to replace the headers when the engine is in place?
If yes, how difficult is it?

I have a Roush 427R.

Thanks.

Frank

Yes, it is. I swapped between back and forth between the small and large SPF headers with the engine bolted in place. The driver's side is quite the challenge, but it definitely can be done.

what are the small and large header you talk about?

theres a listing on ebay right now...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Super...Q5fAccessories

on that listing it says the pipe dia is 1.5 my headers do not look like those, my flange does not look like that at all, and my pipes are 1.88 dia. (using a caliper)

what headers might i have? i have read that the 402 header is the best one to have, mind you i have the ford 392 crate engine with the Z heads.

can anyone tell what header they are in that ebay listing?

wanab5150 09-20-2009 09:35 PM

According to SPF, they only have the two types of headers and the ones on the ebay ad are not one of them. Unknown what these are...beware!
Also, I know some remove a motor mount and lift the engine slightly for installation of the headers.

To finish this one off, I put the 3 inch Full Throttle Sidepipes on my SPF and it woke up the engine.

But damn they are loud when you get on the throttle.

Wished I would have gotten the 3 inch packed pipes rather than the unpacked pipes. Gotta save the ears somewhat!

Jim, for some reason Stephen likes the 3" x 20" long unpacked ones the best - maybe a creature of habit???

Anyway, about 95% of the Cobrapacks I build are WITH packing. Most popular length is 24" long body, but I sell all the lengths including 32" ones.

When I called the guy who builds the Cobra Packs, he said the difference in noise was minimal. After having the packed ones on my car and hearing the un-packed on other Cobras in NorCal I concur.......not enough of a difference to loose sleep over.
Their both loud............Best mod I've done on the car.
